Winficld S. Sclilcy,
WHO WILL COMMAND THE
GREELY RELIEF EXPE
DITION. HIS RECORD IN OUR NAVY.
We tliitt week prpwnt our readers
with thh likeneiw of Commander V. S.
Schley, of the United States Navy, who
will have chargn of the expedition that
will soon nail for the Arctic regions in
search of the Greely party. From the
sad fate of a long list of Arctic explor
ers and relief parties who have gone to
the frozen regions of the north never
to return, it will lie readily conceived
that he who volunteers his services to
penetrate that iceWg-jcmetery of
heroic explorers in search of lost hu
manity or their remains, is a man of
patriotic bravery that commands the
admiration of the whole civilized world.
Upon the tablet which lirs the names
of a score of valiant Arctio heroes will
now t plnced that of Win6eld S,
Schley, and time will invest it with
either , the brilliancy of a successful
humane accomplishment, or tho sad
halo of another sacrifice of human life
for fellow humanity.
Winficld S. Schley was liorri in
Maryland in 18,19, and is now in the
45th year of his age. He was appoint
ed to the Naval Academy in 1856, and
graduated in I860. At the opening'of
the Civil War in 1861 he was attached
to the frigate Potomao as Master, and
stationed at Ship Island. In 1862 he
was trans fcrred to the gunboat Winona
of tho West Gulf blockading squadron,
and was in all the engagements which
led to the capture of Port Hudson, La.
So conspicuous was his bravery during
this conflict that on the 16th of July,
1862, he was promoted to a Lieuten
ancy, boon after he was transferred
to the gunboat Wateree of the Pacifio
squadron, in which lit) served for two
years, during that period being com
missioned tui a Jiieufi'liant Commander.
In 1867 he was assigned to the Naval
Academy, where ' he remained an in
structor until 1871, when he wa trans
ferred to tho Bernicia in the Asiatic,
fleet After several foreign tours he
again returned to the Naval Academy
for threo years, and on July I0th,1874,
was promoted to Commander. Ha then
commanded the Essex on the South
Atlantic Station during 1877-78, and
since that time has been variously as
signed. At tho time of his selection to
command the Greely Relief Expedition
he was under service in the Naval
Bureau of Equipment and Navigation.
Commander Schley is now actively
engaged in selecting and organizing the
crew of 150 that will accompany him,
and expects to sail on his mission early
in April.- Tho expedition will be com
posed of three vessels, and will be
equipped for a two years absence. Mr.
Schley leaves behind him an anxiomi
wife and an interesting family of chil
dren, and a nation that will bid him
and his brave comrades a God-speed
and a safe return.
In the door yard of Delos Hochkisv
at Cheshire, Conn., stands an apple
tree which is supposed to le the ohW,
largest and most fruitful in New Ro
land. It is the last survivor of the
orchard which was set out by tho Brut
settlers of that neigh'iorhood, and pop
ular belief fixes its age at 180 years.
The tree is 60 feet high, and the. tips
of its outmost branches are 1 04 feet
apart. Mr. ITochkis alUnns that h::
has picked 123 bushels of sound apple
from it in a singV year.
