It gratifying to note a practical
unanimity of sentiiiieot Congress in
relations to any more land Krants
They haye btteii thn fruitful source of
more evils than any other kind or suif
idy given ly the Government, In
nearly every case they liavo worked
she grossest injustice, anJ in scarcely a
jnngle instance have they suWrved
Uie purposes for which the donation
was made. The putilic domain hn
iWo despoiled for the sake of corpora
tion! which have cheated the Govern
ment and roWiedthe settler. The grants
have uniforoily escape! taxation. They
have enriched organized capital at the
expense of the Government and people
and then refused to l-ear any of the
burden which all other kind of prop
erty incur. There in also, as we. learm
-to he a change in this respect. The
bill recently presented. by Senator Van
Wyck compels all railrouds and , cor
poration! holding lands by grant from
the Government to tako out patents
for thenn. win reu pon they will leome
taxabK ' Even in the event of the
passage of Roch a law it is not improb
able that some device will lie discov
ered to evade the liability, but Con
gress will have done its duty and show
onie diapoaition to protect thn people.
80 far the Governuent Itai never had
returned to it ao much a the money
expended ill surveying a single luiul
grant held by any of the corporations
Over 1 00,000,0()0 acres of land have
through this medium escaped taxation,
but the eicperoieH of the survey are
atill due to the Government. The pub
lic will in time grow wenry of this
wholesale robbery and demand a differ
ent order of things.

About 2 o'clock T"sdey afternoon
Are was discovered in the New State
saloon, in 'Jacksonville. The flames
rpread very rapidly and soon passed
beyond the control of the fire depart
ment There was a great scarcity of
water, which embarrassed the action of
the firemen, and, for a time, tlie. whole
town was threatened, , At the time of
the fire no wii.d was blowing. The
roofs were also covered with snow and
ice, which impedecj the progress of the
fire and aided the department in ob
taining control. Omi man leaped from
the second story .window, in a panic
and broke an arm. Several women
barely had time to escape from some of
the buildings. The firemen eoncen
trated all their efforts and finally pre
rented the flames from crossing the
street at a critical moment and gained
control
