Geo. A. Pout, of Susquehanna, Penn
sylvania, enjoys this dietinsuisherl
honor, representing the 15th District
of Pennsylvania, comprising thn Coun
ties of Bradford, Susquehanna, Wayne
and Wyoming. Mr. Post is oijy
twenty-nine years of ago, of fine physt.
ca! proportions, a smooth face strongly
marked with more than ordinary char
acter for one of his years, and is one of
the most popular and promising youinj
men of his State.
Mr. Post was horn in Caha, N. Y,
September 1, 1854, removing at the
ago of ae ven to O'vego, in that State,
where he resided until 1873, receiving
his education in the Owego AcaJemy,
and the Oswego Normal School. He
then removed to Susquehanna, Ph.,
shortly after entering the service of the
Erie Railway, in which he was soon
promoted to a position of responsibility.
He was elected Mayor of Susquehanna
when only twenty two years of age,
which position ho filled with distin
guished ability.
Mr. Post, while in the railway ser
vice, and during his Mayorship, im
proved his evening hours by reading
law, and so naturally apt was he in
mastering the intricacies of Blackstone,
that in a f'tw years he was admitted to
the Ixir. The politicians of northern
Pennsylvania liegnn to see that Mr.
Post had won a standing on the tidal
wave of pu'ilio popularity that would
elect him to Congress as a Democrat in
thn 15th District, which in th" previ
ous Congressional election had given a
Repuhlicn majority of 4,621. Conse.
quently he was placed in nomination
by the Domocrats, and elected hy a
plurality of 2,454 votes over the lion.
C. 0. Jadwin (Ind. R'p.,), whose term
expired with the Forty Seventh Con
gress, This great victory by a young
man of only twenty-nine years of age
ovrr a gentleman who had sorved ac
ceptably in Congress, and who in age
is many years his senior, is the greatest
enconium that an appreciative! constitu
ency could bestow on the sharacter and
ability of Mr. Post.
OTHER HONORS
Mr. Post is prominent in other than
political honors. He is a leading mem
ber of the Knights of Honor, having
been Grand Director (executive head),
of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania
for three years, and the representative
from his State to the Supreme Lodge of
the U nited States for four years, and
in 1880 was one of the Presidential
electors from Pennsylvania. He is one
of the owners and editors of the Mont
rose Democrat, the organ of the De
mocracy in his district, and has Iteen
an active campaign orator almost from
boyhood up.
Mr. Post is married, and has already
become one of the most popular mem
bers of Congress now in Washington.
He is very unassuming, and impresses
thn student of human nature as a
"coming man" in our national a flair.
