think it their duty to fleece a traveler
out of every cent he has for passage
money. Son d who attempted to keep

mak From the Mission to the mines
oiio has to cross the river some twrnty
eight times; therefore it ia utterly in
potuiUilii and foolhardy to attempt to
pack in afoot. Tlio Indians conduct
most of the pack trains, charging enor

(iieat indignation is felt throughout
the camp toward interested parties who
have puWirilird statements claiming
tha; thu mines could lie reached from
Heron Siding. Some few managed to
get in by that route, but it has been
closed by snow for weeks. To those
who seem to Ui disposed to rush off
immediately to the mines, I would give1
this advice: , "Htay where yo are till
Spring." The last of March or April
is soon enough to start. At that time
at least two light draft steamers (which,
am now under construction) will be
plying on Coeur d'Alone lake. These
boats will run 42 miles alwve the Mis
sion, or within three miles of the miiiea.
And this will be in ample time to
secure claims, an there ia a larije scope
of country not yot prospected. With
regard to the mines, I coiwider them
the best prospect struck aiuco gold was
discovered on tho coast. The country
abounds in rich placer and quarts
vi ins. The quartz in free milling. I
found many specimens which will run
from 1500 to 12000 per ton. Many
nuggets are found from (3 to (50. A
few days Morn I left it was reported
one was found in a side gulch worth
over 1 00. The creeks have been proa,
pected for about 23 miles aud found
rich. Tli pi J wis will extend in length
50 miles, while the side gulches will
probably pay well Only about fight
claims have been worked at different
points along thn creeks. Most of thete
are ou disputed ground and the amount
taken out is hard to get at. I saw a
two days' run divided between foar
imett, ta;h' gutting eight and a half
ounces for hi sham, There are three
qualities of gcdV, running from tl&to
$19 per ounce. The xmntry is quits
heavily timlerd. Them are aliool
