Mil THE EUGENE CITY GUARD Saturday...,, ..November 54, ism. BR Cood Advice. A Tucson jury re:ontly found a man who had killed his wife and another woman in the presence of his two little children guilty of simple manslaughter. The Judge, More whom the cosh was tried, was so outraged by the verdict that he bestowed a wholesome repri " mand upon the jury concluding as fol lows: "Such verdicts, gentlemen, are a mockery of law and a travesty upon justice, and render trills ly jury a farce. By such verdicts, gentlemen, you assume (lie responsibility for the condition of affairs which exists to-day in Graham county, making it, as it in, a foul blot upon the t;ap of Arixona, and a disgrace to tho civilization of the age. You, ly this verdict, have deprived very man of the constitutional right of protection. You have sanc tioned disorder, and have welcomed anarchy, and were it not for the press of business before tho court, and the great enpense which would be incurred by tho impaneling of a new jury,. I would immediately dismiss you from further consideration of any matters before tho court. Gentlemen of l'"' jury, you are discharged, ond 1 only regret that I cannot discharge you for the term." The righteous wrath of Judgo Selden, though voicing a tenth ing rebuke, did not extend quite so far as that of a Victoria judge in a case triod before him some two months age, in which the prisoner, a stout young man, had struck with a sand bog, and killed, ft feeble old man, and was ac quitted by the jury. Tho judge, after expressing his astonishment, discharged the prisoner with tho advice to go out and "sand bay; the jury," a line of ad vice, which if followed, would, it may be, have a wholesome effect in fixing the degree of guilt in criminal cases, in which sympathy or more sordid con aidcratioQ, too frequently blind full jus tice. Enttro Ignoramosti. Albany Doniocrat. Recently two or three families came from Boston to tho northwest, but they imagined that this' was an uncivilized oountry without any advantages, poor ignoramuses, that no furniture was to be obtained hero, decent to use, and in fact nothing good enough for people from Massachusetts, so they brought a carload of their thine. Tho freight on them to Fort land was $1000, and from Portland to Seattle $200, we un dorsland about as much as the whole stock could be bought for here. We have been told of an occurrence in Al bany of much thffsamn kind. It illus trates the abject ignorance of Eastern people about Oregon and the 'North west From private letters and other sources we hear of incidents a'lout the opinion many havo of this country, tome thinking that wild Indium prey around our doors, niul that beasts of prey follow our footsteps, that log hoisca are the rule, and that sueh things as schools and churches are like hens' toeth, while nil luxuries, like pianos, carpots, silk drwtsos and stove pipe hats aro nonenities. They think they can take up land anywhere, even in pur streets; and ones in awhile such people screw up their courage enough to come hore, the same as the Boston families who foolishly paid 81200 freight When they get here and find that there is not a dozen jog houses in the Willamotte Valley (we have nev teen one yet); that pianos and stove pipe hats are as common here as in New York or Funnsylvania, or even Missouri, tlwit as good furniture is nude here as any wlwr in the East and as cheap, with the exemption of black walnut good's that clothing and dress goods, carpets and the like can be oh tained Item nearly as cheap as in IV duno, Illinois, they open their eyes and wonder how thy ever could have been deceived in this way. All of Pakota, as teen from the rail road, it prairie; all of Montana is mountain, valley and canyon. The landscape in each Territory i alike destitutoof green. Tho eye becomes accustomed to the prevailing green. The eye becomes accustomed to the prevail ing russet, but it does not case to long for the living hue. The growth of t, Paul and Maine apolis is wonderful if the valuations by Brtdstreet't Con mercial Agency of buildings constructed Jliis year, are not exaggerated. According to that authority the amount so expended was 117,890,000, while Chicago ' in the same time paid ? Rait Lake City, control 'the VlvS Ctotral Rail road and collect 1500,000 a. year from the faithful followers of tho Church of the Latter-Day Saints, , Nothing is more remarkable than the curious puritanism that exists side by side with the rank ungodliness nf New York city. There is not in the city an art exhibition or a library, and there are very few reading rooms, that are open on Sunday. An apple tree is in full bloom at Walla Walla, W. T.
