of General Shorman is published to
day. The general shows that while
his legal term of sei vice does riot ex
pire until February 8, 1884; that the
season of the year is not suited, to the
changes necessary In his rotinmicnt.
He then says: "I have anticipated my
retirement by some months to enablo
the president to make these changes at
more convenient season of the year,
and also to enable my successor to lie
in office before the assembling of the
next congress. I therefore roquost the
authority to turn over the command of
the army to Gen. Sheridan the 1st of
November, 1883, and that I be order
ed to my home at St. Louis, there to
wait till my legal retirement.
