THE EUGENE CITY GUARD. HATUKDAY... .SKPTKMHKIt 15, 1883. Lane County. Lane county is located al llie titrad of the Willamette valley. It w ft rich county, ftnd Ann of the brut in tlie ftate. lu industries are confined to Tunning arid stockraisftig. The agri cultural lands are ursurpasst-d in their Icrtility, white rolling hills aro luxu riant pastures for the many cattle and Sheep. There are no manufacturing PnterprfHMi in the county, yet the towns, of which there are many, are in a prosperous condition. Eugene City, thn county seat in located aliout center of the county, and was founded by that old and much rrspocfc'd pio neer, Eug'-nn F. Skinner, who flrut settled on the place in 1845, find died thero in 18G.r. The town in sur rounded hy hills on each side, the grandest and most beautiful being Kpenerr Dutte, which stand about six miles southwest of the town. It is a health); place, most beautifully locat ed, and ha prospered in the past and kept pace with the advancement of the Stato. In 1874 tho legislature lo cated tho Htato University at this place, which has already become one of the leading institutions of learning on the want and a great credit to the. State. The buildini? is a tino brick, and cost 150,000, which sum was donated by tho enterprising people- of Lano county. Cut a few years ngo Eugene was the only point of importance in Lone coun ty. Now there arc Junction City.Oess. well, Coburg, Springfield, Franklin and other places of less importance, whuJi divide tho business with t1 n parent tiwn. The agricultural landiirc rolling in portions of the county, while much of it is level prairi. It is un doubtedly one of tli!) tho finest coun ties in the State. StandarJ. Completion of 111 e J. P. 1 1 After many and great rflort and many failures tho Northern I'ncillc has been formally opened to travel Thus tne flint hopes of but a few years ago are realized into fict, and the "vain dreaming" of a half dozen saga oious men of forty years ngo will koep their memory green when their cap tious critics aro given over to oblivion. The celebration of the past week has been a glorious vindication of their patriotism and intelligence. Hut of tho living the greatest glory haj been to Vilhrd. Attended by a train of distinguished men hs has triumphed as did a Roman f old. To tho men who so unhesitatingly trusted $8,000,000 for investment into his hands, he has paid royully, an! to Wall Stroet he has demonstrated that ho is indepen dent of its cabals and intrigues. In tho last spiko speeches nothiuu was more fitly spoken than Mr. Vil lard's tribute to Jefferson, who among othergreat services to his country ad .led this immense and wealthy cmpiro to cur posessions. As to the effects of the railroad it is Certain to enliven every business, and to hasten tho development of varied in dustries so that the man who would at' tempt to prophesy the state of the Northwest country, as it will be twenty years hence, would meet only insult and derision. The first great instru limits in that development is just now beginning its work. Died. Coin to Wit.
