The Republican papers of this State have insisted frequently and at groat length that the revelation of Dorsey concerning the shameless purchase of Indiana voters during the campaign of 1880 is false. But one is lead to in fer from the constant iteration of their excuse that Ex-Senator, Ex-Secretary of the Republican National Commitoo Dorsey, the intimate correspondent of the Republican leaders and candidates, s a villain, proves it a matter of tho greatest importance. No doubt Dor sey lins no Terr scrupulous idas in respect to right or wrong; he was uu questionably educated in a bad school I of political morals; but his evidence must stand or full by the corrolioration of circumstances and of incriminated witnesses. The circumstance that Dorsey was sent to Indiana and gave bin clos est attention to campaign matters is well known; the fact that a dinner was was given him by the Republican lead ers, in Now York City, and by such leading lights as Beecher he was hailed as "saviour of the Republican parly," and tho statement made by President Arthur that "Indiana was a Demo cratic state, but that it was carried by close oreaniy.at.ion and a great deal of soap," is very well rcnumilter ed by those who read the papers. Evi dently Mr. Doney was very illustri ous person who persuaded not by his silver tongue but by his golden twon ties. These name newspaper moralists as sert that Dorsey is inexcusably base for thus telling the truth. But consider ing this from the Dorsey stand point that men who wero involved with him in defeating the will of the peo ple as Arthur and others reaped only honor and profit while his slmro was infamy and depredation his indigna tion is natural and just Stephenson who wont to Indiana at the earnest request of Mr. Arthur to help distribute the "soap'' is reported as saying. "Arrived at Indianapolis I found I had a responsible duty to perform. I was obliged to stay in a lack rxm, not well lighted, night and day to guard the money there, was a pile of it and pay it out on orders, all of which were written. 1 kept these orders as vouch ers, and hove tjot them yet, and they represent every cent paid by me. It was not altogether a pleasant task. I had to stay there and guard the money, much of the time hoing left alone, with nothinu but my revolver for my pro tection. Mr. Stephenson is a prominent New York banker. He also says that the money was given in sums ranging from a few.hundred to many thousands of lollars, to certain chosen leaders in the various townships of the state, who disbursed it in their immediate neigh- liorhood among the purchasable ele ment. No Interference with "Getting Rcllgitn." A great camp-meeting had been go- a . I - nig on lor more man a ween among the negroes at Warsaw, and when the excitement was at its hoight a colored sister, in a transport of enthusiasm, throw herself down on the floor, and rolled wildly about from side to sido in the state of hysterical frenzy which pre cedes "getting religion." Some members of tho congregation egan shrieking and singing and clap ping thoir hands to encourage her in well-doing, and one elder started for ward with tho intention of picking up the Buflerer; but the preacher disap- nroved of anv interference, and cried out, in authoritative tones; "Stop! Bro' Johnson, stop! Leavo dot sinner where do Lord done flung her." Harper's. Judge Jere Black, of Pennsylvania, died at his home in that Stale last Monday. Judge Black was one of the ablest men in America, and one whom the people alwaysfound battling for the right. He was never, accused ot dis honest practices in his official or private career even by his most partisan enemjes. Peace to his ashes. The Secretary of State, tt, P. Ear- hart, has received ft letter from, the Governor of Idaho, asking to negotiate a contract with the State of Oregon for the keeping of Hie insane of IJdha 1 Two Watrh rhitni. Iho young man with two watch chains across his vest boarded a Wood ward avenue car at eleven o'clock yes terday forenoon. Among the passen gers was an old woman who had been inquiring about taking tho Bay City train at tho crossing. She looked across at the young man with great in terest for a minute or two and then said. "Your time must bo very valuable, young man." He bowed and mumbled something which she die! not catch, and leaning forward sho said: "I s'pose one 'o them watches is for when you go down, and the other is for when you come up, chl" Ho shifted around to look out of the window, and seeming somewhat vexed at his want of courtesy, she continued: "Seems to me it would be cheaper to hitch an eight-day clock to your shirt bosom." Ho didn't reply to that, either, and tapping him on the knee with the han dle of the umbrella, she inquired: "Young man, I want to catch the Bay City train." "Yes'm." "What time is it by all your watch chainsr "I I about eleven!" he stammered. " You d id n't look. Come now, here's an old bull's eye that's been in tho family forty-eight years and never had an inch of brass chain hitched to it I'll bet it shows the right time nearer than anything you've got." She hauled out ft watch almost as large as a saucer, and rattled it around and waved it atwut, and as sho slid along tho seat towards the door she Continued: "I'd let them chains run down and hitch to your boot straps! Any young man as will go and toggle himself all up and crisscross his vest with chains and spangles roust have got strayed away from some twenty-five cent store and wants to be identified and re turned. Have you got baked 'tators hitched to the pocket ends! Say 1" But he dropped off and fell down and got up and got away before she could further abuse him. Detroit Free Press. 1 Possibility of the Fntnre. On more than ono occasion during v the last 3,000 years the barbnrio hordes of the East have overflowed their boundaries and have swept westward, overwhelming the young civilization of Europe and obliterating nearly all the landmarks of western art and progress, and at the present time, if we can cred it the Tekin correspondent of one of tho Calcutta papers, there is in China a powerful and rapidly growing party that advocates the making of yet another gigantic excursion toward the land of the setting sun. The Celestial Empire is, no doubt, immensely over populatod, and will probably ere lorg seek some now outlet for her surplus, citizens; but it is difficult to believe that she will attempt, save by peaceful means, to attain the desired result. The great unknown country has been quiescent for so long that it is almost impossible for a European to contem plate that the sleeping myriads should ever ogain put forth their herculean strength Yet, if China should awake; if she were to look westward with cove, tous glanie, and were to once more burst her bands, in response to that mysterious impulse which in the East occasionally seizes upon ft whole people. how could she be resistedl According, to tho last edition of the Bovolkerung der Erdo she has ft population of 434, 000 000; ftnd mpposing that estimate- tor it is only an estimate to be even approximately correct, China could put into tho field more soldiers than there are souls in Germany, and, if she so willed, could, with a host of 60,000, 000, trample all the- civilization of Europe beneath her feet.
