A quarter of a century ha elapsed since these men associated themselves together by this act Many are numbered with the dead, and all have grown old and silver-haired, and still there is no railroad to Astoria, but the time will come when it will be built, and many of these old pioneers will live to see this enter prise, started by them twenty-five years ago, carried forward and completed, and Astoria take the place she is entitled to by nature in the commercial ttorld. the Siuslaw Country. Florence, Lane County, Or., July 14.. I am here on the Siuslaw river, south side, assessing what little there is in the Douglas county side. It is very inconvenient for peo ple here to hcloog to two couuty organizations. It makes road and school districts wrong, and, as Laue county has the largest population, I favor annoxhif the same to Lane county. Many refuse to go to Gardiner to vote for county offi cers as the expense is too niticli. They can 4ot make the trip for lew than 88, and if our county d.'HM nothing else, they ought to grant tliem en election precinct. The Siuslaw from its woiith to tho en i nf tidewater is some twenty irnk-s, and is a fine river for that dis tance --iTei'l? water for a schooner all the way. The land ir. small river lioitonu on each side, more criers a'l the way up, and the people seeir cotitented. There are two caun"ries on the Lane county side and one saltijig .estJiblislimciit, John Dame's, in Dougla c Vaty. The county road from Eugene is within seven miles of tidewater, aud I understand that Henry Wade, ot the Umpqua, is going to place a steamer on the river, nnd there will he a tri vcek'y st'ge from Eugene to tidewater, a dis tance of thirty-seven miles, to connect with ihe steamer and sUite here at Florence for Coo bay. The child was born blind, and is 8 years old. Though both eyes were restored to sight, yet to see distinctly a focal glass equal to that of the lens remove 1 will have to be worn.
