Giftnniiii, the Italian murderer who
killed one of his partners, Ricca, near
Capo Horn, has been on trial at Van
couver, W. T., for two days and was
con vicled Friday night, of murder in
the lirst degree, the penalty for which
is death. The circumstances of the)
murder have been related. Giaunini,
Count Candianni and Ricco were oper
ating ft potato sugar, near Cape Horn.
Ricco came up missing one day and
Giunniui said he had come to Portland.
Ricco's body was afterwards found in
the timber, and thn several different
stories told by Giuuiiini pointed him
out as the murderer, property ot the
oiurdere.l man being found on the ac
cused, confirming the cliarge, Giau
nini is a young man, but is reported a
member of a band of brigands in his
na'ive country. ; It was a wieked, cold
blooded murder for the purpose of roli-lwry.
Progrru of thr- Cunnf.
' It is stated, by the son of Count D
Lesseps, who has just arrived at New
York from Panama, that 7000 lalioren '
are in the company's employ and less
than 3 per cent of them are on the sick
list. The preparatory work hat now
occupied two years of the seven yean
in which the great ditch was to I? com
pleted from ocean to ocean, according
to the views of De Lrsspps, in 1881,
They allowed two years then for Hi is

practical surveys, clearing away , tree,
brush, rubbish, building houses for the
workmen, securing tools, provision, ,
dredges, hospitals and medicines. Now'
at the beginning of the third year, thsj
company is entering on the work of
dredging, digging am) blasting, with a
fair prospect -of 'coinploting the vhol
job nt the end live years from dat
At this timn the whoU?f xpenses of the -company
are estimated, t $550,000 per
month, or S6,600;t'?a year. This inr
probably apart f rem the cost of th
dredging machines. When these bcgi&

will lie increased. At tho very highest)
and allowing an average of $550,000
a month for the two years of pre para- ;
tory operations, the company cannot
have expended to date more, than $13,
200,000, probably not $10,000,000 ex
clusive of dredging machines and eon
tracts for future, work to bo done by.
the contractors. From those cold facts,
there does not seem to bo any gooil '
ground for the damaging assumption;
that the canal, fully completed, ' will
cost anything like the enor.noua esti
mates mado by its enemies, the trans
continental railway'directors, In fact
there is reason to believe that it can b
done for less than $100,000,000, cer
tainly less than $120,000,000. The
present assets of the company amount
to $85,000,000, $00,000,000 of it cap
