The Umatilla Burdtr. " The follow fng'ar the facts developed in the Mclherron reorder, a portion of t which are gloamr-d from the East Ore genian: Sunday morning the hody of a man who wan in town only a fow day heforo, was discovered two and a half mile from iVndleton, in the Uma tilla river, with a ropo around his neck, by an Indian named Kioullee. The name of the man was Charles Mul hwon, a trapper and hunter ly pro fession, about 5 fot 8 or 9 inches high. He was last Been alive Friday evening on tlio reservation, in the vicinity of Old Queen's domicile. When he left . town he had in his possession a hag of silver and quito a sum in greenUcks and gold. In his pockets were discov- ered $250 . in grcenhackn and $30 in gold, hut the silver is missing and can not ho found. A hole aecmingly made by a pick-axo was a through his head. The face and head was mutilated con siderable. The crime, somo think, was aone by ollendod Indians, as the mur dered man offered money and insults to the squaws. Ho also hod with him, it is rumored, two hottles of whi.-ky which ho gave to the hucks and sent oft" rejoicing, hut who returned In-fore he left thoir wigwams to find him making love to their women, and it is supposed they liscame enraged, lassoed the man, liunig Iiiumi.d dragged him to the river in which they wished to hide their crime. There is no douht that it wis murder deliberate and atrocious, whether perpetrated hy Indians or not is all surmise, but it is not certain tint the crime was committed for mor.ey, as most of the man's wealth was found on his body. Ho had come from Idaho over the mountains, riding a cayuse and driving a pack horse. On sevenl .occasions after arriving in Pendleton where l.o put up at a hotel, ho was seen tiding toward the reservation, the Inst time on Friday, tho 24th. The squaw testified that she heard a loud quarrel going on near her hut, hut thought nothing of it as quarrels were ofj fre quent occurrence in her neighborhood. An extra effort will bo made to dis cover the murderer, as too many have iinen aian on the reservation for which mo one has been brought to justice. . A Pennsylvania Court has rendered H decision that is based upon common sense and common honetty. A wealthy widower paid assiduous courl lo a Mr damsel, and it became understood that they were to 1e married. Jiut the ly old fox, three or four days, before lis formally engaged himself to his liuly Jove, transferred all his property to his trustees, to bo held for him during his life and to bo conveyed aftor his death to his children by his fir.it wife. The unsuspecting victim married tho o'd follow, and ho died not very long af ter; but when the sicrot deed was brought to light the bereaved woman wont into Court and was ullowcd her dower, the decision of the court bein" O that "tho instrument was a fraud upon her just- expnctations." Undoubtedly it was. 'Where is the likely young woman who would think of nm-rvin" a rich old codger, unless with the thought were associated golden dreams of Well-to-do widowhood! . From 1862 to 1881, inclusive, the expensesaggrpgated over $106,000,000. Yet the number of Indians has been steadily decreas ing. Stealing has been going on in thia branch of the public service, as in all others. Eleven hundred and forty trains a day pass the signal tower of the Penn sylvania railroad at the junction of Seventeenth and Fillxrt streets in rhiladelphia-the largest number that daily passes any oue point in the world. Recently Mrs. Partington bade Isaac get ready for church. "Rut where shall I go, motherr asked Ike. "Go, my son," answered the old lady, sub limely, "Go to any church where the Gosp.1 U dispensed with." I The brighter lights of the Strakosch Opera Troupe gathered round them a few friends on Satur Jay evening for a quiet little supper. The talk turned on Max Ktrakosch's new baby. "He's get a tooth," said a gentleman sitting at one end of the table. "Max is very proud of his baby," said Miss Kellogg, who was sitting at tho other end. "Vee," said the gentleman, still car rying out the train of his own thought, "and he's got two more coming. Miss Kellogg shrieked and dropped her napkin and her knife and fork, while tho gentleman still further en livened matters y insisting fiat his refereuce was solely to the tseth. Governor-elect Pattison of Pennsyl vania is made of the right kind of stuff and is not the man to apn royalty. Ifo declares, that so far as he can con trol, his inauguration shall not cost the peoplx a dollar. This brings us back to the ago of the founders of our repub lic, when the pomp and displuy of modern times were entirely unknown and we had a decidedly better and a purer administration of public affairs. frThe HilUhoro Independent gays: Major Bruce was gored again by his Jersey bull last Friday, which it the second time.
