! 1 ! TDlXKSblVMQ D1T. Pmldfjit Arthur's rrotlnmallon for I DflT of Fcamins and Prayer. In conformity with a custom, the an nual observance of which in justl held in honor bj this people, I, Chester A. Arthur, President of tho United Statew, do htnlj set apart Thursday, the 30th day of November next, an a day of public thanksgiving. The blessings) domanJing our grati tude are humorous and varied; for the jw.cn and amity which subsist butween this republio and all nations of the world; tor freedom from internal !' cord and violence; for increasing friendship between the different sec tions of the land of liberty, justice and constitutional government; for the de votion of the pooplo to our free institu tions and their cheerful obedience to the mild laws; for the constantly in creasing strength of the republic, while extending its privileges to .fellow men who come to ns for improved means of internal communication; for increased facilities of intercourse with their na tions; for the prevailing general health of the year; for the prosperity of al our industries, a liberal return for the mechanic's toil, affording: a market for the abundant harvests of tho husband man; for the preservation of the nation al faith and credit; for tho wise and generous provisions to effect the intel leotual and moral education or our youth; for the influence upon the con cience of restraining and transforming religion, and for the joys of home. For these and many other blessings we should give thanks. Wherefore I do recommend that the dsy above designated bo obserrod .throughout the country as a day of na itionol thanksgiving and prayer, and .that the people, coasing from their . daily labor and meeting in accordance with thoir several forms of worship . draw near to the throne of Almighty God, offering to him praise and grati tude for the manifold good which he baa vouchsafed to us, and praying that his blessings and mercies may still con tiuue. And I do further recommend that the day thus appointed may bo mado a special occasion for deeds of kindness and charity to the suffering and needy, so that all who dwell within tho land may rejoice and be glad in this season of national thanksgiving, In witness whereof I hare hereunto . sot my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed, Dono at the city of Washington this twenty-fifth day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand ei;;ht hun dred and eighty-two, and of the inde pendence of the United States the ono '. hundred and seventh. Chester A Aiituur. Ty tho President: F. T. FitELisaiit'vsEK, Scc'y St. I,. ep I. -I- Tilt Trespass Law, The Standard publishes tho following item to show that the act passed by th last Legislature, to prevent hunting and fishing in enclosures without per mission from the owners, instead of in terfering with tho sport of hunters, will result in their bouelit: A large number of sportsmen went out on Sunday determined to get in another day gunning for ducks and .goesa brforo the trespass law, passed by the Legislature comes in force. From the number of people seen on the street on Sunday evening loaded down with ducks and geose, it is judged that the days' sport was good. I)eputy Street Superintendent Matthews mado a kill ing among the geese. It is tho opinion of many that the trespass law will in terfere with tho pleasure of our sports men, but tho probability is that it will prove quite the contrary. It provides that no one shall hunt or fish in any in closure without permission of the own' r, and any one ordered to leave such preuisos and not going away immedi ately, shall le judged guilty of a mis demeanor and punished by a due of $3. This will put a stop to hoodlums hunt ing and slaughtering game before it is grown, and will save the farmers from tho annoyance of having their fences thrown down, pickets torn off, animals shot and crops destroyed, while any portsmen willing to conduct himself as a gentleman should, can probably ob tain permission to shoot over nearly any person's gruuud. Parties having good lakes or ponds on their farms will be able to preserve them, and lease .hooting so that the act will be for the benefit of the true sportsman. The largest diamond-cutting house is in Amsterdam, employing 400 persons, where- tho Koh-i-noor was cut The trade is ditliculi, and the wag.'s ore from tl to $12, or even $14 a day. Mistaken for a Dber. Mr. Jan. Robinson came into Ililhtboro, says the Tribune, on Monday afternoon, and no tified Coroner Hrown that Alec Died soe had been shot by Sam West, who mistook him for a deer, and from him we obtain the following particu lars: Bledsoe and West were hunting dcor last Sunday, and about 4 o'clock in the afternoon, while tho former was moving through a picco of 'tall fern, West, thinking ho was a deer, fired, and a moment later was horrified to find that he had mortally wounded his companion. Examination revealed the fact that the ball, which was fired from a muzzle-loading rifle, .had penetrated the breast just above the nipple, and evidently entered the heart, Tho ui fortunate man lived but three bourn, and after his death was carried to his father's home, The affair occurred three miles ahovo Manning's mill, on Dairy creek. The coroner immediate ly summoned a jury and is holding an inquest. Bledsoo was 23 years of age, possessed a kind disposition, and having no vices, was admired and esteemed by all his acquaintances. About two a weeks reo a man was shot near the same place, having beon mistaken for bear. We are told by the dispatches that stamped envelops will be cold to the public after January 1, 1883, at a re duced rate of 10 per cent, on present prices. The postoflice department has also arranged to print special return re quest notices on envelopes with an ad ditional charge when ordered in quan tities of 500 or more. Assistant Post Diaster General Hozen states the fact is not generally known that stamped envelopes when spoilt through misdi rection or other causes can be exchang ed for postage stamps of the same do- nomination at the nearest postofllco. ass cyftgssa The lending Nvlcntlnt efto lv ayr". that uiiwtdiseaiies are caused by disordered kiilncvs or Liver.
