Our Minister to
The appointmen of William Wal
dorf Astor as Minister to Italy recalls
some very interesting incidents in ths
history of that ycung man's political
career. Ho has aspired for political
honors for some time, and about a yjar
ago was nominated, for .Congress, an
event that delighted him beyond
measure. All the Astors, indeedf we'ri
happy at tho thought of getting ths
family name on , Hit Congressional
record Who could say that William
Waldorf might not some day become a
great statesman! The family pridt
was so tickled, in factthat the head
was knocked out of the family barrel
a proceeding most remarkable, when it
is known that the head in ths Astor
barrel is usually hooped down tight,
Mr. Astor looks like a young man who
, i ...
woum preier tne amusements ot fasty
ionablelifo to political honors, in which
respect he differs from Perry Belraontj
who is grave and "dignified. Well,
when tho campaign opened he went
personally into the canvass with the
enthusiasm and industry of a ward polls
tician, He cut a ludicrous figure your
gentleman politician always does. At,
tired scrppuloustly from his hat to bis
boots, ho haunted rum-shops on the
east sido, and tossed off glasses of,
brandy-and-water with cart-drivers,
'longshoremen and dustmen. Of course
the rum iu these groggeries was wile)
stutr to go down a delicate gullet, but
our political fledgling displayed a hero.
ism of which his friends never dreamed
him capable. Whenever the Mulaooly
Association of the St, Patrick's
Biothorhood would give a halt, out

young bucks who had left their carta;
hackstands and stables to have a eight,
of dissipation, and paid bills at the bar
with astonishing liberality. The coun-,
try candidate, tries to win his way to
popular favor by kissing the babies and
bestowing sweetmeats on tile children.
Our friend, actuated by a similar
motive, sought introductions to the
plump Irish girls, and whirled then

through it all, defiantly holding his
nose aloft. All the young women so
honored wero delighted, and pronounced
Mr. Astor a "foine gintleman." But J,
think the young men could not have
been won over by his condescension,
for our friend wasigiymiiuioualy louttd
at tho polls. Whorefore all this dia-('
comfort at the balls and of the vile,
brandy went for nothing. After the,
election Mr. William Waldorf Astor
sank into obscurity, piqued and humili
ated, and might have remained in this
condition for years to come had not

known to himself ) lifted him out of it.

Payinu His First Bill It is said,
among the firs things after married,

it was this piece of information which
