td the next National Convention of the
Republican party of delegates, "who
are opposed to the restoration of the
Rourbon Democracy," is pursuant to
parposeu which may give the next
Presidential canvass some unlooked-for
features. The editor of the Republi
can is flen. Mahone'a serviceable and
trusted friend. His is no idle talk.
It is another stage in the development
of what, for tho want tit H bitter
phrase, may lie called Mahonisui.
Tho able and tireless Tirglnia leailer
contemplates a witter tield of operation
than that shorn State affords. His
aihbitioit looks to a higlic'r seat than
the United States Senate. No htiiiors
btit those b the Presidency itself will
satisfy him: The country does not yet
understand if en. Malioue; His friends
and iutimnte3 claim for him a higher
capacity for leadership than lias gener
ally liecn accorded to him: They point
to his success at every step since he Bet
up for himself in Ilis own State. 0o
to Virginia, among his followers, and
you will witness admiration and devo
tion which leave no doubt that Ma
hone's followers are perfectly tfneero
when they speak of his leadership and
capabilities as Napoleonic! Whatever
in other places may be thought or safd,
they will not give an inch from' this
line. With them, who is tile coming
man is a nettled question! Whatever
audacity can achieve they feel suro of;
only they deserilte it otherwise ltonce
the proclamation in favor of throwing
wide open tho doors of tho next Re
publican Convention is no idle talk.
Nor does it matter so much whether it
is dono or not. The plan contemplates
tho possibility of its being done; but
specially the probability that it will
uot be done,
. The purpose whereof this is an indi
cation might or might not bo aided by
throwing the doors of tho Convention
open to nil comets proclaiming them
selves enemies of Rourhonism. It is
deemed a point of policy to make the
proposition, but it is in no manner es
sential to the ends in view that the
doors bo so opened.
Tho march of event, according to
tho view and the plan whereof the
proclamation referred to is but a speech
by the way, will, in the belief of the
engineers, be onward and triumphant
all the mime!
Make way for Mahone, tho anti
liourhou leader, whoso followers do
clare their intention to march on to
Washington.
