To Many Chinese. It is probably for
tunate for the Chinese here that no more
succeeded in getting in before the restriction
bill came in force. There appears to be more
here now than there is any need )f. The N.
P. R. R. Co. have all they want on their
lilies in course of construction, and will em
ploy no more. The Oregon Construction
Company, who have also been hiring large
numbers, have now all they need. From
good authority it is learned that there are
uow 5,000 Chinese in and around the city
who want employment. Many of these
haye come up from the fi dieries, and the
prospect is that the number will keep in
oreasing. The wages of wood sawyers will
probably soon take a tumble, and in a short
time all the street work will fall in the hands
of ti.e Chinese. It is reported that Chinese
will also be employed as drivers on the street
cars, which i not unlikely to happen.

THE BAN FRANCISCO LIST.
Frsm January 1st up to July 28th there
arrived at San Francisco thirty steamer
from Hong Kong, bringing the enormous
number of 26,056 Chinese passengers, and
enough more were expected to arrive before
the restriction bill came in force to increase
th number to 30,756. Those arriving here
fiom San Francisco were included in that
number. The total number arriving in Ore
gon aud California between January 1st and
August 6th is 33,623. Quit a number bav
,lio landed at Victoria, most of whom,
sooner or lator, will probably find their way
to Oregon.
WHAT BECOMES OP THEM.
The greater number arriving here have
been sent forward at once to work on the
various lines of railroad now in course of
construction, anil we shall not fully realize
the situation until the railroads have been
completed and these thousauds have swarmed
back here to overruu the city and crowd their
way into every avouue of labor.
Iu San Francisco it is quite different, a
will be setn by the following from th Ex
aminer: "Ut the twenty.iix thnusaua wno
came here but few have left for the interior,
the majority preferring to tarry in the city,
to engage iu trades even now overworked
by Mongolian, to the exclusion of white
girls. Beside the great evil wrought by this
competition, the influences of the heathen
ara otherwise felt."

Divismx or Wasco An attempt will
soon be made to divide Wasco county. The
distance of many of its most populous locali

the ends of justice are often neglected on
