After a few moro tumbles the children

Tho noxt day was the one before Christmas,
and .11 the little folk, were busy gettiug their
Christma. present, ready.
Grandma had a secret all her own, and not
till after supper did Buy ono find it out; then
the large folding uoora otunrt-n iiioom.i.f, ..u

beautifully trimmed from top to ooiiom wnn

really seemed as if the tee could not hold an

But at last, amid cxJamations of delight
from tho children, tho enwning glory of the
Christmas tree was dseovered gr.ndma'g

took the roof off, and Ellaaid the sheep must
be given to Bertha.
But grandma wa. not tlmigh yet, and with
a comical twinkle in her brjht black eyes, she
took down a wire, on ono nd of which was

All along the base of the ice was a trans
varse ridge of earth, iu which fresh
green .ward and stones were mingled to
gether, which the glacier pushed for
ward as it glided over the rocks.
On the right was a liuge mass tx
rock, which had been torn .part by
the pressure of the advancing ice. The
weight which had overcome this obstaole
must have been enormous, for the evi
dence of suoh terrific force was before
my eyes. Not even the solid mountain
aiu nminnl of the hardest of our
rocks, could arrest the forword march of
the terrible glacier. This block of gran

about 20 feet long and 15 broad, It had

It would not be strange, indeed, if in
the course of 40 or 50 years this glaoier

0 hen to Die.
The death of a man may reach unto
ends greater and grander than could be
compassed bv his life. Suppose that
Lincoln had lived on ex-President in
our midst to-dav. pensioned on $250,000,
takings things easy, corpulent,, soliciting
public alms for his friends -why, this
had been to shut him out of our nation's
future! In suoh a case his son would
not be in the cabinet to-duy nor would
he himself have ono disciple where now
he has ten thousand. Nothing is truer
than that a man may live too long live
until he is hull down to the nation, live
to slip out of the world by the nar
row opening of a common ana unno
ticed grave. The hero whose blood is to
run in the veins of the
future but bo taken in his
prime; must be taken before that,
like the bear in tho winter montliB, he
has time to consume his own grateness.

Tho place for him to have died, and the
time.was at Home's gates. Had Napoleon
the Third been intendod for a name

not have been permitted to look upon
him after he was shrivelled in the fire of
Sedan. Had ho been worthy of immor
tality, time', last photograph of him
would have shown him at his greatest
and best. Patriot lives are the very ribs
of the Ship of State. But to be worthy
of this end, tho human oak must be taken
when it is live, before it is worm-eaten

M. Pasteur has resolved to extend his
studies in vaceination to yellow fever,
with a view of determining whether or
not the disease is due to parasites, and
can be guarded .gainst by inoculation.
A broad field of investigation is opened
to Pasteur, as it is suggested by his dis
coveries thus far that all contagious
maladies may be due to parasite growths,
the virulence of which may be so re
duced by his method of inoculation as to
render this class of disease, no longer a
matter of dread.
