named Hankin discovered the body of
a man in the river near the wharf at
Nicolai's lumberyard, some two milt
below this city. Coroner Garnold wae
iiniuedistely notified, and proceeded to.
the spot. He found the body to be
that of a man apparently about 50)
year of age, 5 feeet 1 1 inches in height
with dark' hair, chin whiskers, and)
moustache mixed with gray, slightly
bald. It wo near the wharf, aad
about fifteen feet from the shore,
where the water at present is but foar
feet deep.- It was nude with the ex
ception of a- shirt and undershirt, be
neath whiuh a piece of bale rope had
been passed and fastened in a slip
noose, to ti ends of which was fas
tened a stone weighing nearly 10ft
pounds, whioh had prevented it area,
rising to the surface. The feet were
bound together by a piece of wire, un
dorncatb which on an arufcle was v
small towel. The body bad evidently-
been in the water fee two- or three
weeks, and it is probable wo tlirowm
there during the late- high water, and
came in siiht when the river receded.
It was conveyed to the coronal's office
and an inquest wiO be held' to-day. It
has not been examined by a sturgeon a
yet, with the exception of a wound or
