him affirm that he will not accept the
honor at the cost of soliciting tho vote
of a single representative. Shortly
after his ruturn here Just yoar he
formed a law partnership with W.

EX-BKNATOR J. II. MITOIIF.I.L
Is popular with a considerable portion
of his party, but no incurred uncon
cealed opposition from the Indepen
dents. His power in securing tho sup
port and best effort of strong political
workers throughout the Slato, and
bending their will to hi own, with
nothing but bis individuality to attract
them is simply wonderful. His friends
claim that he con carry Multnomah
county, which elects eight representa
tives next year in the face of all oppo
sition even if it takes the form of open
warfare. He is strong in Eastern Ore
gon, but no county lieyond the moun

friendly to Senator Mitchell assert that
if he is- put forward as a candidate,
enough Ibpulilieaii in Washington,
Yamhill, lientoii and Linn counties
will stay away from the polls to insure
the election of Democratic legislator!

YestPrdny morning workman
named Hankin discovered the body of
a man in the river near the wharf at
Nicolai's lumberyard, some two milt
below this city. Coroner Garnold wae
iiniuedistely notified, and proceeded to.
the spot. He found the body to be
that of a man apparently about 50)
year of age, 5 feeet 1 1 inches in height
with dark' hair, chin whiskers, and)
moustache mixed with gray, slightly
bald. It wo near the wharf, aad
about fifteen feet from the shore,
where the water at present is but foar
feet deep.- It was nude with the ex
ception of a- shirt and undershirt, be
neath whiuh a piece of bale rope had
been passed and fastened in a slip
noose, to ti ends of which was fas
tened a stone weighing nearly 10ft
pounds, whioh had prevented it area,
rising to the surface. The feet were
bound together by a piece of wire, un
dorncatb which on an arufcle was v
small towel. The body bad evidently-
been in the water fee two- or three
weeks, and it is probable wo tlirowm
there during the late- high water, and
came in siiht when the river receded.
It was conveyed to the coronal's office
and an inquest wiO be held' to-day. It
has not been examined by a sturgeon a
yet, with the exception of a wound or
bruise uear the inner corner el the left
eye; no marks of 'violence are risible
but there can be very little doubt thae
a foul murder hna Urea eoromitted. No
rook of the ami, kindi aa tho one at
tached to the bocly are to be seen i
the vicinity ef the wharf, aad it in
probable the body and the rock were
carried there and thrown from the
wharfcwherort was surposed the wa
ter was Wp enough to hide it tVirevnr.. ,
So far, the body haa not been identi-.
