that there will have to be a Maliotia

Daytox, Nov. 22. Following is the
report of the health officer to the board
of health of the city of Dayton, I here
with report a great amelioration of the
condition of the smillpox in this city
owing no doubt to the strict execution
of the measures adopted by your board
a few weeks ago to prevent the spread of
the contagion. Following is the sum
niary of the present status: Numlier
of houses remaining under quarantine,
sixteen; Number of persons who hove
or recently bad smallpox and are yet
under quarantine, 30; number of hospi
tal patients, 15; total, 4 5. Six of the
houses will be disinfected within tho
next five days, and 20 patients dis
charged from quarantine. Only three
new cases were reported within the last
week. Most of the patients are conva
lescent. With one exception. I do ftot
a fatal result in any of
them.

Tbe Trial flioltean.
The trial of Charles J. Guiteav foi
the assassination of President Garfield,
July 2d. is now in progress at Wash
ington. The prisoner is dcfendceT by
his brother-in-law Scoville of Chicago,
who has shown himself able- te- eope
with the able criminal lawyers on the
froaacutioa. The defense acknowl
edges the shooting, but claims that
Guiteau was and is insane, and there
fore not responsible. In court, he is
unruly and is continually interrupting
the proceedings with his remarks,
some of which are sensible, while oth
ers are wild and1 rambling. It will be
hard work for the jury to determine
whether he ia really insaar, or acting
a, well feigned part.
