A whale 45 feet long and 30 feet in circumference) was found on the beach near Empire City recently. It will produce 500 gallons of oil which will sell for 50 cents a gallon. N. J. Bunks, editor of the Pacilio Censor at Van couver, ho been convicted of assault with a deadly weapon and was sen tenced to two years imprisonment in tho Territorial penitentiary. Mr. N. II Blootnfield, prosecuting attorney at Vancouver, was engaged with tho grand jury and II. Y. Thompson con ducted tho prosecution. The Albany Democrat ' of October 28th, says: The appropriation for the government work on the bar having been almost exhausted the forces would have been disbaildad in a few days had not contrary orders been receeived from headquarters. Capt. Powell also accepted the use of about thirty tons of light railroad iron, donated by the Oregon Pacific Railroad Co., and sent by them around to the Bay. It will bo used used on tho tramways on tho breakwater and will enable the work to bo crowded along much faster, Throe steamers loaded with tho best steel rails for the Oregon Paciflo are now duo on this coast. Fifteen miles of the road bed, reach ing from Corvallis westward are now just about comploto and ready for the ties, and the work is being pushed as rapidly as the bad state of tho weathor will permit. . One hundred men are at work oil tho west ond of the road, and more are wanted. Tho forco in thai locality will bo increased to 500 men next woek. A schooner leaves Portland this week for Yaquina Bay with 100 tons of provisions for tho railroad hands, 40 tons for the Chineso and CO for the whito laborers. Important ICcws. While in Albany last Wednesday Col. Hogg, President of the Oregon Tacilio Railroad, stated in our presence' that money sufficient (o build the road had already been socured, and that tho eastern end of his lino would bo across the Cascados and into Eastern Oregon hoforo tho close of next year; lie will then be able to carry freight between Albany and San Francisco for d3.50'per ton, and put it through in fortyoight hours. Passengers will be carried for $12 each, and will make tho' trip in 30 hours, Instead of 3J days as it is now. Such news as this will be hailed with delight by our citi zens. Democrat . . Forestalled Villard. . In his lato speech in Portland Vil lard stated that he intended trying to establish a line of steamers between Portland and Liverpool. In the pro ject of having steamers come to our coast from the old country he has been forestalled by Col Hogg. Three steam ers will arrive on this coast in a few days loaded with steel rails for the Or egon Pacific Railroad, and they will return to Europe loaded with wheat Should their first trip prove successful f ul, which Mr. Hogg says he knowu will be tho case, they will return here' regularly. Major Alfred F. Sears, formerly Chief Engineer of the Oregon Railway Co.. (Limited) has just been appointed Assistant General Manager of the Mexican Central Railway Co., with headquarters at the City of Mexico. This road will be w ith its branclien, when completed two thousand fivo hundred miles long. The compaiy are now employing twenty thousand men and are pushing the road as fast as possible toward completion. This' is a r.plendid position for Major Sears' and his lart(o circlo of friends in Ore-" gon will be pleased at the news.
