The eipenses of running th Whit House, which, in tAlitiun to the Fresi (font's salarv, sre'paid out of the public fivtiury, bare wonderful! incn&I since the incoming of Grant' first Ad ministration. Trior to that time the ! 'rraiilnnt t salary wis ouly half' what il hit Uwn ever aince, and yet the pub lie roonoj ijrnt about the Executive ..I iii5.in baa increased in like pro portion. The expenses, without any apparent justification, hare swollen more than one hundred per cent, and were greatest during Hayes incum bency. The New York Sun has been looking into the matter, and recently published the d.-Uils. In 1870 the ex penses were $11,300, in 1873 they were $54,160, in 1874 they were 177,. 804, and they kept on increasing until in 1878 and 1879 they were 888,164 each year, and tho appropriation for the present year is $89,064. This is over double what it waa in 1870. when there was an equal amount of public business to be transacted. The Sun thinks the Democrats were to blame for excessive complacency in permit ting this extravagance when they had control of Congress. It calls upon the aext House to stop the waste. A round sum of $90,000 per annum does seem an norroous amount to spend on little incidentals around tie White House, There must be bad leaks somewhere that should bo looked to. Both these gentlemen were offered their places temporarily, but tney thought best to decline any condi tional appointments. MacVeagh do- umei at Uie outset, but James' Imita tion is all that determined the post ponement of the President's plan for making a new cabinet Now that the President hai had it made clear to him that James and MacVeagh will not remain conditionally, his cabinet! plans will become cleared. A great deal may happen in sixteen years. In this period of time, cover ing four ordinary Presidential terms, we have had two Republican Presidents assassinated, another tried by impeach ment, and ono term filled by a man never elected, and, also, two terms of the most corrupt government that free institutions ever suffered, and a d-Iiler ato attempt through a third twn to pave the way to an Empire. Tli.it is the Republican Presidential record in a nutihell. Col. Dan Murphy, of California, is the largest land-holder in the world. He has 4,000,000 acres in Mexico, 60.- 000 in Nevada and 22,000 in Califor nia, His Mexican land he bought four years ago for $200,000, or a'wut five cents an acre. It is sixty miles in ex tent and covers a beautiful country of hill and valley, pine timber and meadow land, and come within twelve miles of tho city of Damn go, which is a sta tion on the Mexican Central railway.
