Tlii Canjou Koid litter.
Tho prosecuting attorney of thin ju-
slivial (Imtrict has been iuljoctd to much
abuse because ho would not become a
willing tool to advance the pecuniary
Interest1 of a clique of Douglas county,
Home time lince a Mr. Benjamin com
iiicnced suit agaiimt the Canyon road,
for collecting toll off of hira unlawfully.
The jury found for the defendant,
after which the cane woe appealed to
the supreme court without the know!
cJgo of Mr. Hamilton, the prosecuting
attorney, some one cine having appended
his (Hamilton's) signature to the appeal
papen. Hamilton then went lefore
the court and moved for the dismissal
of tht appeal, which motion was
granted, whereupon he was made the
target for much mud slinging by Sol.
Abraham's organs, the Douglas Inde
pendent and Fortlund Mercury. A
gentleman of Rosuburg furnishes the
following facts bearing upon the question:
lot When the case was called for
trial, Mr. Benjamin withdrew as pri
vate relator, but was forced by Mr.
Abraham to come back and stand the
the fire. This looks as if Benjamin
was operating in the interest of some
person, other than himself.
2d. By the terms of the agreement
between Douglai county andjthe Doug'
las tounty Koaa uompany, the pre
cinct in which Benjamin's farm is to.
cated is exempt from paying tolL And
that the statements made by him of
having been robbed by paying tolls is
utterly false in every respect
3d. If Mr. Benjamin secured the
county against loss, how are the costs
to come on the county, if Mr. Ham
ilton did not take the case to the Sti
preme Court!
4th, If Mr. Benjamin wants a free
road, why is he working in the interest
of those who contend that the road
belongs to themAbraham and Willis.
Cth, Mr. Benjamin is ashamed of
the part he took in the suit, and m
undertaken to cxpluin it away with a
false statement
Cth. Why did Mr. Benjamin pub
lish his card in the Plaindealer instead
of going to Sol's mulo organ) Because
he knew the people would see at once
in whoso interest he was working if he
used the columns of the Independent.
7th. Mr. Hamilton nays he did not
sign Ml name to the appeal papers, or
authorize any ono to do so, though his
name appeared to tho papers all the
same.
Imporlint Dceuloi.
- Last week in Portland tho jury in
the case of Marshal A Co., (the ware
houseman who hold the wheat that was
damaged by the flood, last winter),
aeainit the Bank of British Columbia
returned a rerdict in favor of the bank.
The decision means that the hank did
not have the care and custody of the
wheat and was not responsible for its
loss. Now the question is narrowed
down to the warehousemen and the
persons who store with them as to who
shall suffer the daraatre. The farmers
will lose it of course.
The lowest bid for supplying post
masters with all official and registered
package envelopes for the year com
mencing July 1st, is $54,720. ... The
bid is based on the number of envel
opes 28,977,230 used during the year
ending March 31, 1881, and which
cost the United States $100,810. Mr.
James does these things much letter
than Mr Key. Brady is not around
now to look after the contracts and
the contractors.
Charles Brown, Dennu Cunniff and
Will Lake had slain and rendered to
oil some GO sea lions out at Orford reef,
up to Sunday last The oil is barrelled
for export, but it is not the only re
source in the sea lion business, as what
are called trimming, bristles, a por
tion of the hide, eta, being valuable
in the marte t The season will soon
be over, as the lx-asts are getting poor
now. Port Orford Post.
The vote for United States Senator
at Albany, N. Y., shows no materia!
change from day to day. The parti
sans of Conkling seem determined to
cling to the fortune of their fallen lord.
ilethe Half Breeds as persistently
oppose him.
-
Tho West Point Academy is turning
out graduates faster than they can. be
supplied with commissions, and some
of them will have to bo relegated to
civil life. Better run on half time and
manufacture them according to demand.
It is said that the election of Jo
Simon, Mayor of Portland means that
J M Dolph will be the candidate of
the Stalwarts for United State Senator.

Since the above was written a cleri

Geo. II. Williams has returned to
Oregon for the ostensible purpose of
opening a law office in Portland, but
really toenter the HbU for U. S. Senator,
He will be a stumbling block to J. IL
