The Standard of the 4th has the following account of the narrow escape of W J Ship ley, formerly a residuut of Eugcue, from drowning iu the Willamette: "Mr W J Shipley, book-keeper at Smith Bros., and a prominent membor of tho Odd Follow fraternity, met with a narrow eicape from a frightful death on lost Sitnrday night. He bad been to E 11 Portlaud to in. stall the o.ficers of Orient Lodge at t at place, and had started back on his ru'urn. The large ferry boat of the Stark street was not ruuning owing to the great amount of drift wood in the river, and passengers were carried across to either side by a small boat. 1 1 attempting to gut iuto tliis, Mr Shipley, in stepping oil' from tliu aprou of the ferry boat, mode a miscall nlatiou and was plunged iuto the rivor. A rush wo mde to get a life-preserver to throw him, but none being found, a smull boat was speedily maimed, and Shipley, in a half drowned conditiou, was picked up nut of the water several hun dred yards north of the ferry lip. He lost a handsome regalia, the property of Sheriff BucStel, which he had worn that niht dur ing the installation servicei. It wis a very narrow escape for him, and it ii a wouder be did not sink beueatb the icy waters. Officers Installed.
