lowing: Walter has, ince a little loy,

longed to tho Young Naturalist' Soci

tho store of curiosities now in possess
ion ofthat organization. About three
months ago he commenced work in tho
Seattle Iron Works, and made rapid
progress, being a natural mechanic.
Christmas being a holiday, he iu com
pany with two or three friends started
olf in a small boat ou a hunting expe
dition. On arriving at Smith's cove
a few milo below Seattle, they pulled
their boat upon the beach prcpar tory

In removing his gun from the loat, by
the muzzle, the hammer of young Wat
tenmeycr's gun accidentally caught ou
ono of the seats causing the gun to go
off and discharging tho contents into his
left arm, shattering the member iu a
horriblo manner to tho elbow. Ho
was taken home by his comrades and
Dr L'agley called to dress the wound,
It was found necessary to amputate
the arm just below his shoulder. The
painful operation was skillfully per
formed and at last accounts the uufor
tunuto young man was doing well. For
a young man who had been accustomed
to handling fire arms all his life the
curelessness that resulted in tho loss of
his arm is inexcusable, but the penalty
he pays is certainly a severe punish
ment.

mas presents but J. J. Murphy, of Sa
lem, conies t tho front and takes the
cake. Last night a young woman with
a bundle in her arms was seen to steal
into tho lot which surrounds his resi
dence, and ufter depositing the bundle,
quickly run away. Tho party who saw
tho transaction thought ho know the
ady, and, believing it to be a joke upon
J. J., who is a well-known wag, said
nothing about it. Tho next morning,
upon opening the front door, Mr.
Murphy found the bundle, and, taking
it into tho house, unrolled a baby
nearly a year old. To say that he was
not surprised does not half explain the
situation, and ho is at a loss to know
why it is ho is forced to become matron
of an orphan asylum, and that, without
saying even by your leavo, Christmas
presents of such a nature aro forced
