Thrilsom difficult in accepting
tniS M the data of bis nativit, Decem
ber being the height of the rain season
ia Judea, whenneithcr flocks nor shep
herds could have been at night in tlio
plains of Bethlehem. But all ChrUteu
dom would la mora stress on keeping
v day in memory of the event than
en success in the selection of tho ex
Bet date it occurred.
In all Christian countries the annu-
ml recurrence of tho day has Ufa ihu
m
occasion of festivities of various kind;
In old England the Yule or Christmas
Llock was Jhrown on the hearth, after
(he evening services. , On the morning
of the day, in more modern England
Lands of siuzors would patrol the
streets and awaken sleepers 1 war!
lm? Christmas carols. In the more
' wealthy families the Lord of Misrule
presided bver the revels on th occas
ion. Various Christiun preachers,
among thera St. Bernard,, have taken
occasion to remonstrate with their flock
for paing too great attention to. tli
festivities of the occasion, and too lit-
tlo to its more Boh nm aspect. Th
houses and churches were decorated
with evergreens, among which tl
mistletoe formed a principal part, as to
that attaches a sacrednesa sinoe the
days of the Druids.
The festivities," which accompany
the advent of this day in our country
are borrowed from our European an
cestors. The annual visit of Santa
Claus is welcomed by all the young folk
when they expect a host of good things
from parents and friend. Tho old
persons regard tho day more as a hoi
iday than one of feasting and mcrri
inent. The Christian turkey or goose
adorn the tables of so mo families and a
general reunion is had.

We have received a letter from Rep
resentative Whiteaker stating that the
bill to reduce donation fees had passed
loth IIouso and Senate, and awaited
the President's sijniature. The follow
ing is tho amendment :
"A fee in donation cases of two dol
lars and fifty cents for each final cer
tificate for one hundred and sixty ucres
of land, hve dollars for tlir.'e hundred
.and twenty acres, and seven dollars
,and fifty cents for six hundred and
forty acres.
It will le remembered that notices
were sent out by the Roseburg lund of
fice summer before last, urging all do
nation land claimants to make their
final proof before January 1, 1880, tin
ker vague threats of cancellation should
they fail to do so, The true inward
ness of that appeal is now shown in its
true light, Ily the old law the officials
were allowed to collect $30 for a sec
tion, $20 for a half section, and $15 for
a quarter section. Their fees are con
tingent upon the amount collected,
hence their anxiety to have tho dear
people pay these fees that were from
four to six times greater than contem
plated by the hew law. Representa
tive Whiteaker deserves the gratitude
pf the people of this Stato for pressing
(he bill to a successful issue.
fiince Hancock got nearly twice as
many votes in tho north as in the
south, it seems alnout time for that
threadbare humbug alout tho south
ruling tho Democratic party to bo bur
ied. The Democracy polled closo on
to threo million votes in the North,
and they are the dominant power in
determining its policy.
It is said that ex-Governor Hant-
yaft, who is now Collector of the port
Philadelphia, is to bo disciplined by
tflie stalwart because ho failed to pay
hjs political assessment in fact that
the Republican Senatois will nut vote
to confirm him.
Wurld says : "A political newspaper
is properly much more a partisan insti
tution than a public office, and yet
there are probably Democrats employed
in every leading Republican newspaper
in the country, and Republicans in
every leading Democratic newspaper.
They are not employed as political
writers, of course, but they are em
ployed to do work which has no con
nectiou with jolitics, because they
know how to do it When tho politi
cal control of a newspaper changes
hands, if the new manager should turn
out all tho subordinates who did no.
agree with his politics, his stockholders,
if it had stockholders, would consider
him fit for a lunatic asylum, especially
if he told them, by way of explanation,
that the spoils belonged to the victors."
Thero is certainly no reason why public
business should be run inefficiently any
more than any other kind of business.

Tl.e Rep iblican organs are not now
as ready to deny tho treaty of llen

throwing of Sherman overboard is
plainly indicative of what is coming.
He was clearly entitled to remain ia
the Treasury if he 'wanted to do so,
and ho took care plainly that he did in
his published letter addressed to Pri

to make Sherman President; but now
that Garfield happens to be President
elect himself, he refuses to allow Slier
man to remain in the position in which
his party believe he is capable of doing
the most good. Tho fact is, that Gar
field possessed some of the worst se
crets of Grant's Administration, and
Grant had personal knowledge of mat
