Mr. Mozier, who Uvea about thirteen
miles from The Dalles, had his feet

A house on Dr. Bailey's farm on

burned last week while- the tenant, Mr.

frame house, valued at about $3,000
and was an entire loss.

the storm last week. Tho cabin was
safely towed to Empire City. The
prospect of recovering her machinery
is discouraging.

Jacksonvilln Sentinel : The Stages
from the south have been a little be
hind time owing to the heavy roads in
the Siskiyous. Tho storm and rains
lost week wero much heavier in the
mountains than in the valley making
travel dillicult. The stage encountered
18 inches of snow on the HiMiimit.
Tim Covart arson trial consumed 17
days time in tho State circuit court
that closed its regular session in Jack
sonville, last week. The cost of this
trial to Jackson county was $2,700.
The Jury after a deliberation of 36
hours filled to agree and were dis
charged. The case was re opened at a
special session of the court last Thurs
day. Ned Ilealey, a miner, died in the
Jacksonville jail on the 3d iiint He
had been drinking heavily and showed
symptoms of delirum ' tremens. An
opiate was prescriWd and be was di
rected to takn a teaspoonful every two
hours, until sleep was produced ; but
instead of following the direction
Healy took at one swallow, either in
advertently or with suicidal intent,
three fourths of the contents of the
bottle a quantity ecjual to ten doses
from the effecla of which he died in
one hour.

On Thursday morning lost, as two
little girls, named EoflT and King, the
oldest only about ten yean of age,
were ou their way from the residence
of the parent of the latter named
child, on Howell Prairie, Marion coun
ty, to the Liberty school house, they
were met while joingdown the narrow
guago road by a Bum named Charles
Miller, who had been working in the
Jieighborhood. The actions of the
man alarmed tht children, who started
on a brisk walk, bat Miller soon over
took ihem, and k-v'I tlit youngest
child a half dollar, told kr to go on to
school or he would kill her. The terri
fied child went to tht school house, and
informing tho teacher of what had
taken place, school was dismissed at
once and a search luade for Miller and
the girl The latter was soon found
on her way to school in a half dead
erudition, and it was speedily discover
ed that the (lend who had detained her
had outraged her person and then niado
good his escape. At last accounts
parties were on the track of the fellow
and with every assurauco tf soon cap
turing him, and should he. bo, there
will lio no judge or jury need to inves
tigate the case. When last scon, Mil
ler was on tho road leading to Silver
ton and his pursuers in hot pursuit.
An outraged community will not be
blamed for hanging such a wretch as
this fellow.

of supreme bliss. All her outstanding
bonds have been called in, and on tht
1st of January next she will owe noth
ing to anybody. Not only that but tht
future expense of conducting the Stata
Government is provided for without
levying a tax on tho people. When tht
Illinois Contrar Railroad was chartered
Stephen A. Douglas incorporated a pro
vision in the charter that the Company
should pay a certain per cent of its
gross earnings into the State Treasury.
This was in consideration of the land
grant mado to the Company. Congress
granted tho luud to tho State and tho
State to tho Company on certain condi
tions, including a per centum of its
gross earnings. The Railroad Company
has been endeavoring to get rid of the
tax, but the people have imbedded it in
tho constitution, by prohibiting its re
duction or repeal. That was ona of
the results of Granger legislation, and
and now the incomo from the State's
interest in tho railroad is sufficient to
run tho Government
Work is progressing on the new
town hall at Jacksonville, and it will
bo completed daring tho fore part of
1881.
The Lakoview Herald, which had ita
oflice destroyed by fire this Fall at
Lakoview, now comes to us in a new
and beautiful dress. '

who after stealing valuables worth $200
from Morris Mentor's dwelling, Jack
sonville, returned all the plunder
through a third party.
