Section 1 repeals all laws which im
pose or recognize civil disabilities upon
a wife not imposed by existing statutes
upon the husband, and gives the wife
a right to sue in the courts alone for re
dress of her personal wrongs. Section
2 provides that the refiponsibilities of
the parents in the absence of miscon
duct shall be equal, and the mother
.shall be as fully entitled to the custody
and control of the children and their
earnings as their father, and in case of
the death of the husband tlio wife shall
come into as full and complete control
of the eftate and the children as the
father now does in case of the mother's
death. This act is now in force.

prescribes the manner in which the

are up calling for a school meeting next
Monday for the purpose of levy irg a
tax to support the public school.' It is
the first time for several years that
such a proposition has been submitted-
Eugene claims great honor for its edus
cutional interests, and it Hint a
though our schools should be main
tained. Our people have already paid
1 12,000 for a first class school building,
and the old board of directors, in their
anxiety to maintain the honor and rep
utation of our school system, left the
district last Spring r."ar $2,000 in debt
to teachnrs for their wages. In order
to cover this and meet their obligations,
the new board was obliged to use over
$1,000 off the public money', that was
properly due to the present year, to
cancel the indebtedness. Hence the
necessity of a small tax, say two mills,
which will give us a nine months school
and at the same time hold up tho repu
tation which Eugene has already ac
quired, as the best educational town in
the State, While mistakes may have
been made, yet I believe the school is
giving general satisfaction under the
present management, and think it
should 1 maintained. I trust ourpeo
plo will look to their interests and vote
a tax, otherwise no more than a ft
months school can be maintained.
