1 V1 THE EUQEIJE CITY GUARD EUGENE ClTf. OREGON' HATTTRIJAY. JUJSTR SJO. I HMO. Democratic Ticket, i FOR PRESIDENT: CEN. WINFIELD S. HANCOCK, Of Now York. FOR VICE-PRESIDENT : WILLIAM H. ENGLISH, Of Indiana. For Presidential Electors, J. K. WEATHERFORD, of Linn, T. G. OWEN, of Coon, ; J. U. FULTON, of Wasco. ' CINCIWITI COSTE. The following i the result of the first ballot taken Tuesday evening: ; Field, 65. ' ' ,J3ayard, 163J : Morrison, 62. Hendricks, 49 J. Thurman, C8J. Hanoock, 17 1. Payne, 85. McDonald, 3. Lovtland, 5. Seymour, 2. McCWlan, 2. Jewett, 1. EngliHh, 1. Randall, fc Lathrop, 8. Tilden, 3. Parker, 1. Black, 1. The Oregon delegation voted 4 for Field and 2 for Tilden. 8ECO.VD BALLOT. ' The following is the result of the second ballot: Hancock, 705. Hendricks, 36. IJayard, 2. -- Tilden, 1. Cm. Hancock Nominated. Gen Winfield S. Hancock, of New York, was nominated Thursday morn ing, on the second ballot at Cincinnati, for President On the first ballot hn received 171 votes, and on the second 705 to 30 for Hendricks; 2 for Bayard and 1 for Tilden. His nomination was made unanimous without a dissenting voice. Gen. Hancock was born in Mont gomery county, Pa., February 14, 1824, and at the at the age of 16 entered West Point Ho served as Lieutenant in the Mexican war, and was breveted for gallantry at the battles of Contreas and Clierebuseo. In 1850 he married Miss Almira Russoll of St Louis. He served in the Florida wars, and in 1859, came to California. He served through out the war, winning especial honor at South Mountain, Antietam and Gettys. burg. In the latter battle ho was se verely woundod. Near the close of the war he was assigned to the duty of or . ganizing the army of 50,000 veterans ' from dischargfid volunteers. He gained the rank of Major General in the war, He was conspicuouriumong the military commanders of tliu reconstruction peri od, trtid after "occupying various posts in the West, he was atmigned to the command of thn Department of the Atlantic, with headipiurters in New York City. Gen. Hancock has always been a Democrat, and his name has been pre sented to the National Convention sev eral times by the State of Louwianio. On the first banot ho received most of his strength from the South; 02 votos from thoHO States being cast for him. His record is not smirched by any quos tionablo transaction, such as Credit Mobilier, DeGolyer paving contracts, or back pay salary grubs, but on tho contrary he has always borne the name of a pure, upright citizen, and never has there been even a whixjer of sus picion against his honesty and integ rity. Laying all personal feelings aside we are satisfied there is no man in the United States who ran poll as many votes as Gen. Hancock. So far as the Pacific Coast is concern ed, California will surely cast her vote for him, while wo llieve that w ith the projH-r organization, and tho healing of all ersonal ditlerences, we can carry Oregon. The South also will give hjm its full strength, and New xork is now certain to cast her vote lor her honored son. We are confident of success, and believe that the grand old Democratic party will again sweep tho country in NovemlsT from tho North to the South and the East to thn Went, and we will once more have an honest ami eoonom ical government W. H. EnglUh was lnni in Scott county, Indiana, Augmtt 27, 1822. He pent tlireo years at the University of Hanover; is a lawyer, but wheu at home is chiefly devoted to agricultural pur- uim, Jlelrtw lieen successively Clerk of the Houk of RejTesentative of In diana, Clerk in the Treasury Depart ment, Clerk of the State Constitutional Convention, Speaker of the State Legis lature, Member of Congress several tiroes, where lie acquired national prom inence, Regent of the Smithsonian In stitu'e. Mr. EnglUh is one of Indi ana'! ablest tons, and his high charac ter, and spotless reputation, both pub be and private, gives strength to the ticket and assures the electo al votes of Indiana, Hill's Manual. Mr. G II. Hodges is now coun Manual" the enlarged and improved editioa This is a work that should be in the possession of every family, es pecially where there are boys and girls to educate. Honest John Whiteaker has made the best Representative in Congress Oregon ever had, his untiring efforts for the welfare of the State being duly appreciated fey many of his political op ponents, judging from the manner in whioh he leads his ticket We cannot look for George to equal him; for in spite of the adultation bestowed by his party organs, he if destined to prove in nis new capacity what he has always been, a flowery failure. The people of this State will find that they have made a sorry exchange when it is too late. JackfrnviUe Hme. flaunted le.
