Tho Siuslaw valley will average ue l&f m;t wiJe and like the valley of the Walton creek has a soil that from every ap pearance is remarkably fertile and produc tive. It is however covered with a heavy uudergrowth of vine maple, salmon berry, and other shrubs. A number of r..ill creek empty into th Siuslaw, and numerous iionies could be mad in theii bottoms. The population along th river is estimated at about 150.bat there is room for several hundred more. This road will open np a part of our county that has hitherto amount ed with us to nothing, and make rapid set tlement of it possible Their supplies and mail uow comes to tlitm by way of Gardiner, and the expense of transpertation is shown by the fact that bacon cost 25 cent a pouud, and a lettr or paper 10 cent for its carriage. Abundant timber, fir, hemlock maple and alder covers the mountains, aud it is but a question of time when this will be utilized. Of game elk, deer and bear are plenty, while the .river i tocked with all kinds of salt wattr fish. Two large canner ies are built on its bank and last year the value of the salmon canned aud salted amounted to $65,000 and this could easily have been doubled. The cost of the road will be considerable, as there is 37 miles; the people located there have subscribe.! a large amount of work, and they will be as sisted largely by the settlers lu th Western part of th county.
