Ale was known as a beverage 400 B. C. It has long been ale fellow, well met. A cow, belonging to Hen Owens, was 'killed in the railroad cut near the University this week, by the train. Messrs. J. W. Jackson, L. G. Jackson and Dr. Chase left yesterday for the New Idriun mines. We see by the Palouse Gazette that Mr. Theodore Uenshaw has boeu married to Miss .Lizzie CorreL Mr. L. T. Bragg, formerly of this place, '.hS been nominated for the office of council man in Colfax, V. T., by the citizous con vention. Ia the hwt uuraber of the Pendleton East Oregeuin we notice the following: "Another preciuct heard from 'tis a Demo-crat-J. C Arnold-a boy." We received a card from Mr. Wm. T. Campbell, dated N'agara Foils, Feb. 4th, this week. We Cherry is home in Canada, and we would not be surprised to hear of his marriage soon. We learn that a certain young man wlio started to Springfield, on the 14th iust., to .attend a ball, bnt who had tuken too much of the "ardent," npset the buggy and threw the occupants out in tho mud, which some what disturbed their toilet, and necessitated a stay of proceedings. Somk pedantic scratcher, who either bor rows or pilfers the Guard, annihilated ns last week through the columns of the Jour nal The lirat paragraph of bis effusion, containing some tweuty lines, shows abuod aat evidence that the author is a vulgar bully aud thorough-paced blackguard. This sen tence is a conglomorate jumble of such ele gant phrases as "belie," "ignorance," "per versity," "crimiuality," "meanness," etc., .applied to the editors of the G imrd. In the second dose of this delectable mess he as sumes tho role of pedant and pedagogue criticises our grammar and punctuation aud in his auxicty to tell the public all he knows, in a few lines, in almost evory sentence traasgresses the plainest rules of punctua tion. It was unnecessary for "Nemesis" to we an anonymous name, as' the monttrous pair of ears that loom up from bohind each sentence and the familiar bawl that issues from uudur the lion's skin, sufficiently in dicate the author. New Idriax Cinnibak Mining Co. We notice great activity going on among the par ties counected in the New Cinnabar Mining uterprise. Dr. B. F. Chase having come here from San Jese, California, to erect a furnace of the capacity of twenty tons a day. Be has been out te the mines for a week in .company with several of the members, aud made a thorough survey aid analysis of the Are, and says that he became so firmly con- winced of the great richness aad extent of the mines that he invested several thousand dollars, and bouud himself to erect a fur Wee for the company that would roast 20 tons of ore every day. The cost of the fur nace will be $20,000. Come to Mr. Goldsmith's and see the Lit il Joker. Bal Mahquc The nasqnerade ball at lane't Hall, Friday, February 14th, wat an ttjoyabl affair. Owing to the fact that no record was kept of the masquers and the characters represented, we cannot speak oi the costumes further than to say that many f them were elaborate. The following per ens were awarded prizes: XL C. Felch, a "Carpet Bagger," first prize; Mis Nellie Owens, "Bride," secoud prize; Miss Rosa Goldsmith, "Drummer Boy," third prize; J. C. Crotch, "Old Father Time," fourth prize. Usios Meetings. The union meeting till continues, and everr eveninz the Conrt House it crowded with people, many being aable to procure a seat, aud even standing room it seldom to bo had. Services have b bee held at tfie Baptist church each morning at 10 A. m. Rev. Mr. Spauswick of Brownsville, preaches each eveninz and eemt to have awakened con-iderable in terest in religious matters. Wo learn that 33 persons have already made a con ession of religion. Dr. Tyler has a good practice, and is very successful We understand that Mr. Plum Canady has been appointed postmaster. We have an excellent school here under the supervision of Miss Mary Hill. The flouring mill here is doing a good bus iuoss. Archie Simmons knows how to make good flour. We understand that Nelse King is lectur ing on phrenology to good audience and mak ing it pay. Mr. J. B. Pengra is away surveying his narrow gauge railway, which we hope and believe will be a success. Mr. Hovey has about sold everything in his store, nud is goiug to leave us, for which we all regret. Hovey will be missed by all of us. Soutl crn Oregon. The Rev." Mr. Wells labors are meeting with good success in Southern Oregon. His field of Winter work is alocg the Oregon aud California Railroad, from Junction City to Roseburg, a distauce of ninety miles. He has found a few communicants at Junction City, where largo congregations attend his services. At Eugene City there is evident improvement b ettcr attendance-at the ser vices and larger offerings. The church has been re-arranged inside; one member of the congregration has given a new altar and chaucd carpet, another a surplice and a third a stole. A children' choir hat also been organized, and the services are tbu mure interesting and edifying. Roseburg and Oakland shew decided signs of improve ment i-l io, and our earneit Missionary has much to encourage him in this field which has so long hid but little cultivation. Mr. Wells has been giving the people at Roseburg a very interesting lecture on the Crusades. Oregon Churchman. BIui Ribbon Club. Temperanee Etchings. Euuuti Crrr. Feb. 20, 1879. How kindly baa their Author permitted that everything beautiful in nature should have its parallel in the human soul. A las cade mountain landscape as sunrise gilds its domes and dispels its shadows it not a more sublime spectacle than tho human counte nance under the influence of a noble enthn- siasm. Such reiiections were surreii in me miud of oe who hat been a casual observer of the tendencies of our city's progress on attending the last Wednesday evening meet ing. The programme of exercise previously an nounced was carried out by Rev. Mr. At- ood in an address, Joel Pearcy ia an essay and Mist Minnie Lockwood in a recitatiou; following which Messrs. Judkins, Dorris, Johns jn, Wooley, Woody aud other made eloquent speeches of five minutes or less. Calls for yet other gentlemen were responded to by silence. The music by the choir, the opening prayer by Rev. Mr. Price, the re marks by Presideut Condon, were each ex cellent, and among to much that it good, it is always hard to give any precedence. But of Mr. Pearcy't essay it must be said that it was uuiiju and could not have produced, scarcely prophesied of, in Eugene six years ago. Yet it was but a gem of spray from that fountain of culture bequeathed by a good government, that should be fostered by our State, and appreciated by our people the State University. Prof. Johnson's was a practical telling speech, the thoughts of a man with a great toul wl o moves not too quickly but for results. At the ending of the closing ode, the secretary announced that the club now claimed a membership of 918 far the strongest in the State. Obsirver. Come to Mr. Goldsmith's and tee tho Lit tle Joker. "IutlieboL-illitmrn.wl and the earth.'' u'u to 'le beginning, w l ',er WH no heaven or earth, " hen thero wa no starlight, twilight hen creation had no birth; hen a black and boundless nothing, Breathless, lifeless, round hiin fill hat occurred to wake hit slumbers ? What was there to break the spell! Breathless, cheerless, all-pervading, Starlew, worldlen, boundteaa uight, Wa the nothing, the beginning, Out of which sprang worlds uf light; Out of which were made the heavens, Countless worlds, remote and near, And all liviug, moving creatures, In the depths of sea or air. Yet we know not what around him To begin the mighty plan Of creation in its vaHtness, Forming lastly sinful man. Why did he not leave great Nothing In its harmless, silent space Rather than make man so sinful As to damn the human race ? But 'tis said that man was sinless Until tempted, when he fell Tempted by a subtle serpent, Crawling from the depths of hell ? Pure and spotless as the lily, In its early opening bloom, Until tempted by the Devil To the shades of sin aud gloom. When that black and boundless nothing, Harmless, lifelcwi, round him fell, Why did God create the Devil, Or conceive an endless hell! If creation sent forth evil, Or an evil come of good, Then where is the point dividing Satan's works from work of God ! When there was no sunlight, moonlight, When there was no heaven or hell; When there was no place for shilling, Why was man to weakness born ! Why was silence ever broken ! Or for sinful man to dwell, Why were devils made to tempt them, And then leave him here to mourn!
