m mini city guard. EUPUNK CITV.OREUOX. 8ATUR1JAY, FEU. lO, 1870. Tilden Before the Totter Sub-Committee. There hat be a long and per iatcnt effort bj tbs He publicans and Tammany rings of th country to drag Mr. Tildttn tutors tin country in some undignified mannsr, with ths hope of falsehood and otherwise to dtmoliili him anl his future pros pects as a candidate for 1880. It may look like a strange combination, but it is no stranger than true that it does exist iu New York. Mr. Til den brought upon h'mstlf the most bitter wrath of the Tammany llinp, by his unceasing and successful ef forts to bring the chiefs of that ring to griei and shame. His next great enemy Mas the Republican pn-'y Tbey have persecuted and persecuted this great man from the day be was made a Presidential candidate to the present time. Thny never dare say ho lacked capacity or ability, but they first alleged that oe had bribed the St. Louis Convention, next he made fa'su returns of his income as sessment, and next that he had been guilty of attempting to corrupt the returning board in some of the Southern States. Permit us to say just here, God save the' mark. 10 think of corrupting the retuniiug boards in some of these Stales is one of the wonders of the ago. All el lorts thus far having fai'ed, his ene mies same forward with a storm of old manipulated cipher dispnehes, which had been in the hands ol 11.- publicans and his Tuumany enemirs for more ti an a year, and it was in evidence before that committee that two or three callings had taken place from time to time. And finally Mr Tildcn seeing there was an extreme effort being made to blacken h in good name, broke silence on the IStu ol October last, by simply giving the die to these charges all in a pile; but the Republicans and Tar;.manyite8 SHccecded in earrying New York by disfranchising 8,000 or 9,000 ad dopted citizens. This cipher dis patch asssult emonutod from the lyibunt oflice, and it might be proper to state that the New York 'JVibune isowuod by Mr. Gould, the old part' ner(of old Tweed himself, am? Acre lit the Kcrcl of that exiraordiuury effort by that paper to sub that able counsel, who dragged Tweed and his comrades from their dark places of crime and diagrucf, and held them up before the public in all their de formities. And nowcouios the testi mony of this d'HtinguMed wi iuss and he comes to the front with that degreo of pluck and grit that would bo calculated to win the admiration nd respect of all good men. And it would appear from the evidencu that . . . commiiue was very courteous, and in fact, it would seem that they had a witness on the stand that over Awed them. Mi. TilJfii started oil in a elear dignified manner and did just as he had dope before, by giving the whole thing a sweepiug denial so far as be had been ooneeiaed. lie said lie had been informed by .Mr. Cooper, thai he (Cooper) had a preposition to obtain electoral votes for money. This Cooper U no less than Edward Cooper, the Mayor ol the city of New Ytfrk, and a sou ol Tcter Cooper, when Mr. Tildcn told Mr.Cooper that he w ould authorize no Iransaction, nor spend money for any Buch purpose. In regard to the Ore gon dispatches Mr. Tildwn says he did net kuow they came iu citili until after a meeting of theoommitte to investigate them. We believ that one or more ol the Oregon dis patches, as translsted.purpoi ts ic have been addressed to S. J. Tilden', am Mr. Tilden says be did not kuew anything ol luem nil UiCtcowruitte met to iuvestigste. And Senator Grover stuteJ, we think, under oath that ho did net send the "GobbU" or "GabUV dispatch, whioh was at tetnpud to be palmed If as his dis patch, and to our mind it is a dear case of forgery and the thing will at some day all leak out. The tele raphiu oflices at that lime were al noil uuivcriaiiy in the keeping of the Kcpublicsu, sad there is ao doubt but in many instances ihev betrayed their trims of secrecy, and there is but little doulit, but that this was the case iu Oregon. It would bo a very easy matter, where all was agrrtd, to ssud any kind of a dis patch and sign any kiu J of a fictitious came to it. Mr. Tilden says nt emphatically that "Jrom the ?tb ol No I Hinr !is i , iawh aa la.ae. Timber, 1870, u. til Deocmb, r Ctk of ill'irB tbo same year, under no circum stances did I enter into any competi tion for seeking certificates by venal inducements. There never was an hour nor moment that I entertained such a thenght," and be farther says, "Whatever evils may result from this subversion of the electoral system and of free government, I resolved that I would enter into no auction for the purchase of the chief magistracy. I was resolved that J would continue to protest against the wrong by which the peoplo wire defrauded," and Mr. Tilden's testi mony shows that Pelton censed to be the clork of Mr. Tilden after he found that I'ellon had acted imprudently, and still further on in his testimony the distinguished wilaess said, "I declare before God and my country that the votes of Louisiana and Flor ida were bought, (meaning by Re publican.) I would scorn and con demn my righteous title, if the De mocracy had secured my seat by fraud." Then all things should be set at rest so far as Mr. Tilden U con cerned, utile s bis enemies are $o per sistent and bitter against him that they will attempt to convince the American that he has committed perjury, and it would seem that this would be the next effort. The Ore ijoninn of the 10th starts off in a rathor weak and and shy manner to accuse Mr. Tild n of falsehood in his evidence before lb" committee, by saying that "Edward Cooper testi fied that he got a dispatch from Tel ion at Baltimore risking for $(JO,000 or 880,000 for the purpose of purchasing of tho South Car olina vote and Cooper told Tilden of it," but Tilden testifies that his an swer to Cooper was thai ho would authorize l o such transaction nor spend money for any such pur- oso. The Owjoiuan thn tries to make it appear that this admis siou of information from Cooper is a contradiction of his general denial of his knowledge of cipher or translated dispatches. Nobody supposes Cooper telegraphed this to Mr. Tilden. lie says Cooper called on him and gave him such information and ho sent tor l'elton to come home, and afterward Pulton was discharged irom his ser vices as clerk in the bank. This stands out ho prominently in every feature of that contort that it wouH be fool ish to attempt to conceal orpaliate it, if we were disposed to, every sneak' thief dowaSouth who ha I anything to do with the dirty muddle, has held or is IioMiiil' a redera allien uml.r Prrsident w ho purchased the ofh'eo of them.
