Lust Escape. Junction City came near
Iing the scene of another disatrous fire,
last Sunday evening at about 7 o'clock the
jcry of fire aroused the people, who are a
little I nervous, on that point since their
late experience, and for few momenta all
was excitement, when it was found that
Berry's botel was on fire in one of the bed
rooms on the second floor. The bedding and
bedstead were burned nearly np and the
ceiling almost burned through. Had the
fire had fifteen minutes more time, another
block would have been in ashes ere morning.
It is thought to have be- n the work of an
incendiary.

to Southern Oregon when he and his brother
published a paper called the Kosebu rg Pan-
taurauh. He had many friends here

It is with deep regret that we announce
the death of Mr. H. H. Gale, lats editor of
the Columbia Chronicle, Dayton, W. T,
which event occurred aboard the 0. S. N.
Cos steamer John Gates early on the morn
ing of the 2oth iust. Mr. Gale, who bad
long been suffering from lung diase com
bined with asthma, was on his way to Cali
fornia wheu the fatal attack came on. The
Hon. II- Green, of Corvallis, who happened
to be a passeuger aboard the boat, was called
iu, unremitting in his attentions to the bying
man. Dr. Green, with the assistance of de
ceased's bro:her, J. XL Gale, repared the
corpse for interment at The Dalles, here
the funeral took place the following after
noon. Capt E. W. Baughman, Purser E.
A. Nuyea, Mr. U. Karsiu, Mr. C. H. Hard
ing aud others on board the boat, reuflered
very material aid iu the untoward event.
XIr. Gale was bom in Illiuois, and crossed
the plains with his parents when a hr.le Uy,
in 1S53. He early learned the printers
trade, became connected with several Jour
nals ou the coast and had uiade his aark in
the profession. His loss will be mourned
by a large circle of friends and accjuaiutaiics.
