Present Councilmen Underwood, Dunn, Edris, Hendricks and Sloan, Marshal Farrell aud Recorder Alexander, th Recorder pre tiding. Absent President Dorris and Councilman Cooper. The proceeding of th last meeting were read and apprcyed. The Judiciary Committee reported the fol lowing bill correct, and the Recorder wa instructed to draw warrant on th Treasurer for their payment, to-wit : S. A. Ogden, $6 50; 11 C. Felch, 82 60 ; r. D. Vunn. 825 : Dunn k Strattun. VI BO B. Alexander, 86; P. H. Farrell, 818 ; James Warmck, 812. The Judiciary Cemmittee reported on the petition m regard to peddler' license with out recommendation, and report accepted and ordered filed. The Committee on Fire aud Water asked for further time to report, which was granted. On motion, the Fire Warden was author ised to employ an attorney to prosecute all infractions of the fire ordinance, at a fee of f 10 before the Recorder, and 825 before the Circuit Court. On motion, the Chairman of the Committee on Fire and Water wa instructed to mak further inquiries in regard to the purchase of a No. 5 firs engine at Portland, and report at his earliest convenience. A petition for the graveling of Seventh street, between Olive and High streets, was received, aud, on motiou, the prayer of said petition was granted ; the gravel to be three load wide in the center of the street. On motion, the Street Commissioner was instructed to examine the sewer opjiosite the brewery, and cause it to o repaired ; also to gravel Oak street from Ninth to the public grounds ; also the alley betweon Oak and Willamette streets, from Ninth street to the public ground ; and also the alley between Willamette aud Olive streets, from Eighth to Ninth streets. The gravel on Oak street to be four loads wide, aud in the alleys two loads wide. On motion, the Committee on Streets were authorized to order such repairs to be made on Willamette and Eighth streets as they may deem necessary. Ou motiou, Dunu, Lockwood and Walton were allowed an extension of one mouth's time for the completion of th feuce ordered, as per contract with the County Court. On motiou, it was ordered that a new side walk be built from Pearl street to the mill race, on the south side of Ninth street. On motion, it was ordered thst cross-walks, three feet wide, be built on the west side of Charuelton, acro3 Ninth strett, also across Charnelton on the south sido of Ninth street. Gale died at his residence iu Ashland, Jack son county, on the the 10th inst He was born in Davis county, Iowa, September 2d, 1842. Ca.no with his parents to Oregon in 1852. Lived with them in Lane county un til he was 21 years of age. He aud hi brother Henry edited and published the Ensign at Roscburg for a number of years. He was a young man of more than ordinary ability, a sprightly, witty writer, which made his paper readable and pleasant He was appointed Deputy United States Reve nue Assessor for this district, aud held that position until the office was abolished. He had a warm heart, a genial and kiud dispo sition, which made him a host of mends. He leaves many frieud and relations to re gret an mourn his untimely death. Taxable Properly in Lane County.
