The attention of the public u called to the ad. in our coin nins of the quicksilver mining company just started, uuder the aus pices of aoiuo of our own citizens, in Doug las county, Oregon. We find upon enquiry that the company, after prospecting a rich mine, and getting their company incorpo rated, about 18 miles south of Roseburg, found that they could purchase the rich cin nabar mine called the Nonpareil, near Oak land, have done so and took that into their company with all it rich lodes and works, and a toon as they can gut a furnace in place of the retort now on the works, they will be able to turn out several hundred pounds of the pure motul in every 24 hours. The pres ent works comprise 330 feet of tunnel, half a mile of flume and pipe, water taiik, retort and building, blacksmith shop and tools, a railroad from retort into the mine and all the tools necessary to carry on the works on an extensive scale, especially when they get one or two furnaces of the improved kind, which they are now trying to do by selling a few share of stock at one dollar a share. Institute. We learn from the Executive Committee of the approaching District In stitute, that most of the arrangement have been perfected enough to warrant the opin ion that the Institute will be a success. The day sessions will be held jn the publio school building, beginning at 9 A, M., aud will be devoted to institute work, proper instruction iu the methods of teaching, school manige mcnt, etc. The evenings will be given to lectures, essays and music, in the brick church. On Friday evening Rev. Joseph McCorniick will lecture on " Christian Edu- cation. An essay may also be expected on that evening from some member of the Insti tute. Three of the boy were ome distauce behind the rest of the party when five or ix Indians, with breech-loading guns andl their faces paiuted, came rushing out into the road aud ha led them. The reds were in scorcn of an Indian who bad stolen a horse from them. After inquiring of the boy if they had sceu such an individual the Indians rode on. Clay say the boy didn't insist on the sjwosne staying at all, but considered them selves lucky to get out of that without hav- ing their "hr" raised. Attn Amputated. Some tim ago Mr. Ed. Carwright had a large and malignant tumor re moved from one of hi arms. While stopping at th Chemeketa hotel in Saloin last week he CAme near bleeding to death by the rupture of a small artery. A few day ago Mr. Cartwright wa brought to thi city and taken to bt V in cent's hospital, his condition not Improving. Tuesday, Dr. Jones, assisted by Drs. Watkius and Rex, amputated the limb at the hospital. The arm wa taken off at the shoulder. The operation wa a difficult one, but wa performed in a very skillful manner.
