and years ago was a fine talker and writer,
moving in the best circles of aocity. H ha
traveled extensively on th Pacific coat, and
was an excellent mining expert For a long
time, however, he ha been on the downward
road, accelerating hi speed as much a pos

Double Homicide .Particulars of a double
homicide which occurred at Salmon river,
over on the coast, last Saturday, ha just
been received : A white man named Perry
Dodson, formerly a resident of this county,
it appear had a quarrel with an Indian
about aoine beef cattle. The Oregonian say
the two men met on a narrow trail near the
coast when the altercation began. Word
led to blow, when Dodson and the Indian
grappled. The Indian was armed with a
knife which he used with murdeou purpose.
He stabbed Dodson teveral time about th
shoulder and back of the neck. Finding
that ha was getting the worst of the fight,
Dodson drew hi revolver and (hot th In
dian, killing him instantly. The affray was
witnessed by two white men and ten Indian.
Several of the Indian assailed Dodaon after
he killed hi antagonist They grappled and
truggled for some moments, when one of the
Indians picked np a shotgun, heavdy charged
with buckshot, and discharged it, the con
tents taking effect in Dodson' back. Death
followed instantaneously. The two whit
men who were witnesses attempted to inter
fere to protect Dodson before he was killed ;
but they were immediately set upon by a
number of the Indians who overpowered
them and held them until the fatal shot was
given, rio violence was onerea me two
men, the Indians simply holding them fast
After Dodson was killed, the Indian let the
two white men go and, mout ting their ponies,
rode rapidly away. Chief Sam, of the Nes
tucks, was present during the affray, but
did not offer to interfere to prevent blood
shed. Soon after the double tragedy the
men left the scene. One of them mounted a
hone and rode post-haste to Dallas to notify
the authorities there of the affair. On reach
in that place it was ascertained that the
crime hod not been committed in Polk coun
ty, o he rode on over to Salem to procure
a bench warrant from Judge Boise. It is
not improbable that aerion difficulty may
result from th tragical affair.

AN OPEN LETTER.
It Speaks For Itself.
RbcEPoRT, Mass., April 2, 1877.
Mr. Editor : Havine read in your paper re
port of th remarkable cures of catarrh, I am
induced to tell "what I know about catarrh."
and I fancy th "snuff" and "inhailing-tub"
maker (mere dollar grabbers) would be glad if
they could emblaton a similar cure in th pa
pers. For 2d year I suffered with catarrh.
Th nasal patage became completely closed.
'Snuff" "dust " "ashes," "inhailiug-tubea,"
and "(ticks, wouldn't work though at inter
val I would miff up the so-called catarrh snuff
until I became a valuable tester for such medi
cine. I gradually grew worse, and no one can
know how much I suffered or what a miserable
being I was. My head ached over my eye so
that I was confined to my bed for many success
ive days, tuffering the moet intense pain, which
at on time hasted continuously for 168 hour.
All sense of smell and taste gone, sight and
hearing impaired, body shrunken and weak
ened, nervous system shattered, and constitu
tion broken, and I was hawking and spitting
seven-eight of my time. I prayed for death
to reliev me of my suffering. A favnmhU
notice in your paper of Dr. Sage' Catarrh
Remedy induced me topurcliase a package,
and use it with Dr. Pierce' Nasal Douche,
which applie th rmedy by hpdrostatic pres
sure, the only way compatible with common
sens. Well Mr. Editor, it did not cure m
In three fouths of a second, nor in one hour or
month, but in Us than eight minute I was
relieved, and in three month entirely cured,
and have remained so for over ixteen month.
While using the Catarrh Remedy, I used Dr.
Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery to purify
my blood and stregthen my stomach. I also
kept liver activ and bowel regular by the use
fAu Pleasant Punrativ Pellet. If my ex
perience will induce other ufferer to seek th
same means of relief, this letter will have
answered it purpose. x ours tnuy
