Nearly nine months ago Henry Wheeloek, a wealthy farmer residing within three miles of Chico, California, was murdered under peculiar cir cumstances aud the body hidden by the mur derer, who succeeded in making his escape to this. State. Ever since the commission of tho murder detectives have been working tho case up. Two or three months ago the skeleton of the murdered man was found, aud from certain circumstances connected with the disappearance of Wheeloek, sus picion pointed to a mau named John Green, who disappeared about the time of the mur der. After a long search it was ascertained that Green was living at Loon Lake in Doug las county. Deputy Sheriff 1 lagan, of Butte county, California, was dispatched to make the arrest, who, accompanied by Sheriff No ble of Douglas county, started from Rose burg last week, aud after traveling (iO miles found tho old mau living in a cabin, thirty miles from any neighbor, and arrested him. Green is b'3 years old, and our informant, who came down on the train with him last Tuesday, says ho very carelessly remarked that if they did hang him it would not rob him of many days, as he already had "one foot in the grave." CAl'iillT. Last Tuesday night three bur glars broke into the office of Mr. G.W. Gray, in Salcin, and whilo working to open the safe were surprised by ollioer Miuto, of Sa lem, and officers McCoy and Day, of Port land, who succeeded in capturing one, tho others making their escape. All the thieves are known and without doubt will bo even tually captured. Cayotks. These pests have beon very troublesome in some parts of tho county this winter and the farmers in several neighbor hoods have organized a crusade against the "varmints." We learn that there have been quite V number trapped on Cayotc Ridge, ouo carrying the trap of!, and two or three days afterwards was taken in while chasing a band of sheep, the trap still hang ing to his leg. The Salem Daily Record of tho 13th, says that from parties who camo over from Dal las last evening we learn that a great deal of excitement exists over there in regard to Grayson; that a few nights ago two persons came to the hotel by the long bridge on norse back, and inquired where a certain Mr. Gray sou resided at, in that place. The parties seemed somewhat excited, and acted rather curious. After obtaining the desired infor mation they left tho hotel, and at an early hour iu the morning one of the parties passed the hotel, riding one horse and leading the other, with a saddle on. It is now supposed that one of thu parties was Grayson, the murderer, who escaped from officer Cherry, in Portland, a few days ntro. Cherry has given up tho chase and gone to 'Frisco, and Grayson is still at large.
