MunuEHKH Akkested. Nearly nine
months ago Henry Wheeloek, a wealthy
farmer residing within three miles of Chico,
California, was murdered under peculiar cir
cumstances aud the body hidden by the mur
derer, who succeeded in making his escape to
this. State. Ever since the commission of
tho murder detectives have been working
tho case up. Two or three months ago the
skeleton of the murdered man was found,
aud from certain circumstances connected
with the disappearance of Wheeloek, sus
picion pointed to a mau named John Green,
who disappeared about the time of the mur
der. After a long search it was ascertained
that Green was living at Loon Lake in Doug
las county. Deputy Sheriff 1 lagan, of Butte
county, California, was dispatched to make
the arrest, who, accompanied by Sheriff No
ble of Douglas county, started from Rose
burg last week, aud after traveling (iO miles
found tho old mau living in a cabin, thirty
miles from any neighbor, and arrested him.
Green is b'3 years old, and our informant,
who came down on the train with him last
Tuesday, says ho very carelessly remarked
that if they did hang him it would not rob
him of many days, as he already had "one
foot in the grave."
CAl'iillT. Last Tuesday night three bur
glars broke into the office of Mr. G.W. Gray,
in Salcin, and whilo working to open the
safe were surprised by ollioer Miuto, of Sa
lem, and officers McCoy and Day, of Port
land, who succeeded in capturing one, tho
others making their escape. All the thieves
are known and without doubt will bo even
tually captured.
Cayotks. These pests have beon very
troublesome in some parts of tho county this
winter and the farmers in several neighbor
hoods have organized a crusade against the
"varmints." We learn that there have
been quite V number trapped on Cayotc
Ridge, ouo carrying the trap of!, and two or
three days afterwards was taken in while
chasing a band of sheep, the trap still hang
ing to his leg.
The Salem Daily Record of tho 13th, says
that from parties who camo over from Dal
las last evening we learn that a great deal of
excitement exists over there in regard to
Grayson; that a few nights ago two persons
came to the hotel by the long bridge on norse
back, and inquired where a certain Mr. Gray
sou resided at, in that place. The parties
seemed somewhat excited, and acted rather
curious. After obtaining the desired infor
mation they left tho hotel, and at an early
hour iu the morning one of the parties passed
the hotel, riding one horse and leading the
other, with a saddle on. It is now supposed
that one of thu parties was Grayson, the
murderer, who escaped from officer Cherry,
in Portland, a few days ntro. Cherry has
given up tho chase and gone to 'Frisco, and
Grayson is still at large.
