Court House to-morrow at 3 o'clock r. m., on
temperance.
Dr. Dean Clarke delivered several interest
ing lectures at the Court House this week,
to full houses.

month or so and then quit, and devote his
time to making photographs,

The turkey trade was quite lively the fore
part of the week. A great many of the un
fortunate birds took their farewull ride from
this place to the' different towns down the
valley.
We learn that A. R. Van Houten, former
ly agent for Wells, Fargo & Co. in this city,
who went East two years ago, is on his way

the room on the first floor, formerly occupied
by Professors Condon and Bailey, prepara

We refer tho.se interested to the ad. of Mr.
Tuttle in another column. Shipping fruit
from here is a new enterprise and Mr. T. in
tenibillowing it up if lie finds it remuner
ative, thus making a certain market for fruit,
a great deal of which has heretofore gone to
waste for want of a market.
The Eugene City Flouring Mills are now
being run day and. night, which means busi
ness, and wo wish the owners success. They
m o turuina out now a splendid article of flour,
which gives satisfaction, Some shipment
we understand have been made and resulted
very satisfactory. The mill by next harvest
will make great improvement in the receiv-
iim of wheat and making of Hour.
The following is a' verbatim copy of the
Thanksgiving proclamation issued by the
Governor of Rhode. Island: "I appoint
Thursday, 29th, as Thanksgiving day, and
request people of this State to assemble in
their houses for public worship and return
thanks to God for his tender mercies and
loving kindness, and may those who are
blessed with abundance give liberally to the
poor."
It is in vain for preachers and pious men
to labor for the conversion of uurcgeueratc
cusses, as long as that vagabond white cow
tears down fences aud commits depredations
on gardens in the south part of town. The
owner of the beast had better take care of
her, particularly at night, or we may have a
first-class cow funeral to chrouiclo one of
these days. .

University. The first ten weeks of the
school in the University closed last Friday
with two hundred pupils enrolled. The
school is certainly iu a very flouruhin' con
dition; tho stuilents are all doing good work,
and evory one seems to be well pleased. The
work being done is permanent and Listing,
and will have a good inlluer.ee throughout
the State in elevating the standard of educa
tion. The young men and women graduated
at the State University under the present
faculty will be thorough scholars, and can
take rank with graduates from any institu
tion on this continent. There is no half way
work beinc done, no show to please the pub
lic and whitewash the pupil, but the work is
thorough and lasting. Jhe perfect order
kept in all the departments, the manly de
portment of every pupil, and the earnest hard
work being done by tho student, indicate
tho efficiency of the Faculty, aud the good
discipline maintained. The people of Ore
gon may well be proud of their State Univer
sity. And we can say without boasting, or
disparagement to any institution, that the
State University is tho best institution iu tho
State, aud the place for young men an womeii
to como to secure an education.
Sot'lABLB. At the sociahlo, under the
management of Charles S. Williams & Co.,
at Dunn's Hall on Thursday evening last,
representative of the Guarii was very
unccriiiioniody ordered, by the above
named gentleman (?) to quit the hall.
We do not desire to intrude our presence
upon any company, but wo profess to be and
to know how to act the euulleinan, aud when
we unintentionally make a mistake wo a.k
to be treated as a gentleman. e have no
complaint to inako of any of the invited mem
bers of the company, but on the contrary we
have for them the greatest respect, and
know that many of tho most estimable young
ladies and gentlemen of the city were in at
tendance. And perhaps on the part of the
niauairers we should bo charitable enough to
attribute their actions to their known igno
rance of tho rules of propriety and gotd man
ners.
