Last Thursday Mr. E. Chiches ter brought to our office a lot of "raugnjrn. bonum" plums which wre the largest yet. We measured several, and they averaged 7 by 8 inches in circumference. Next To Deliuquksm. Marshal Farrel notifies those who have tot paid their city taxes, that unless they step up to the Captain's office and settle up immediately, they will have to fay an extra fee for an interview. He means it, too. Runaway. A team belonging to a man named Brown became frightened on the street last Saturday by a wheel running oil the wagon, and ran several blocks before they were caught The wagon was badly smashed up. . Vacancies. -We understand there are two colarships from this county in the Agricul tural College vacant Those wising to avail themselves of free tuition in that iustitutiou should at o'tte nuke application to State Sen ator Whiteaker who is authorized to make the appointments; Remember that the place to get the finest and most perfect pictures on the coast is at Abells', at Wi tters' gallery. No need to send to Portland or San Francisco to gut pictures enlarged when you can gut them better aud cheaper at home. If your mug is nut so ug ly that it will burst the "machine" he is bound to give satisfaction. . Diptheria. There has beii quite a num ber of cases of this terrible diseaie in the neighborhood of Spores' ferry, seven or eijjht miles north of this city, four or five of which have proved fataL Elsewhere we notice the death of Miss Wilkius, aud we learn that two of Mr. George II. Murch's children died this week with tao same diseaie,' while th.re are several other cases that, in all probabili ty, will prove fatal. A SuooestioV. We would suggest to the people of Lane county the propriety of taking steps toward the organization of an Agricul tural Society. Baker couuty, oneii the new est and trfost sparsely populated counties in the State organized a county society this summer, while Lane, with a larger territory than aiiy other couuty in the State, and possessing more natural advantages, is still wihout any such an orgaization. Let us hear from the farmers'. ( Champion Wheat. Mr.'. George Belshaw left at (his office this' week a small sack of white' velvet wheat, which fs certainly su perior to any we have yet seen. This is fall wheat, and the grain is of extraordinary size and plumpness, arid very light in olor al most white. Mr. B. has been experiment ing for years with different varitfesof wiitat, and gives an emphatic verdict iu favor ,f this, as the surest crop and giving the great' .... . , ., 1 est yield. Gcard Momben of Lane County Hop Growers' Association held their regular meeting on Saturday last, and after trans acting their regular business, the remainder of the time was spent in asce. taining, as near a possible, the condition of the hop crop fur this year. As reported, the vines look well, and show no sicn of blisht or attack from in- ,eots. The aUtement made in Emmet Wells' Hop Circular of August 3d, taken from the Taconia(W. T.) Herald, to the effect that the vines were turning white before they were in blossom, is erroneous, for as far as knqwn at present, (with the exception of one yard), the vines are luxuriant, and fruit of a good size, which is beginning to change color, and will, in two or three weeks, be ready for harvest All members present evinced a determina tion to pick clean and cure as nicely as pos sible, as we are aware it is the only thing that can make a success of hop growing. The next meeting is fixed for September 1st. A. A. S.MiTn, J. H. Brown, President Secretary. i Ballou.s Monthly Magazine for Sep tember. The September number of Bailou's Magazine has many improvements which will commend themselves to the reader after a cartful examination. It is the best number that has appeared for some months, and one of the features is a sea yarn by the author of "The Gold Hunters," in which he gives us a romance of California as early as 1S43, long before gold was discovered by the Americans, although it was known to the priests and some of the Indians years before. Published by Thomes & Talbot, 23 Hawley street, Bos ton, at $1.50 per year, postpaid, and for sale at all the periodical depots in the country. Personal!
