Wednesday. The wheelbarrow was full, the
load consisting of just two eggs, one of which
measured 72 by 6 inches while the other
was about the size of a large pea.

Change. Mr. J. A. iu.nr has leaded
his photograph gallery to Mr. Abel, from
California, and will soon remove to his sheep
ranch in Linn county.
Whkat. S. H. Friendly, who has hereto
fore been one of the largest wheat buyers, is
again in the market, and will pay the best
prices in cash for any quantity of good nier
chantable wheat.
Hi-bkr-ni-ca. This non-descript animal
was in town this week. It is -a cross be
i tween a Douuybrook fair and an Irish wake,
and is an excrescence sloughed off from Bert's
Dramatic Troupe.
Rust. We learn that in some sections of
the county late wheat has been greatly
damaged by rust, and where a few weeks
ago the prospect for over an average crop was
good, the yield will be below the average.
Huge. Geo. B. Dorris, Esq., presented us
yesterday with a lot of the la gest plums we
ever saw. They were the peach plum, and
will average 6J inches in circumferance. If
anybody can beat that, we are ready to be
convinced.
Benefit. A number of citizens have ten
dered the Wyraans a benefit, which has been
accepted, and they will give au entertain
ment at Lane's Hall next Thursday evening.
It will be an enjoyable affair and everybody
should attend.
Ict. The most frigid case of impudence of
theeason is for the agent of a ha'-penuy slum
to present a printing office with a couple of
two-bit tickets, and then get mad because
the editor will not do five dollars worth of
lying for him in the way of pufh.ig his show.
Portrait. We received this week a por
trait (steel engraving) of the Rev. D. R. Mc
Anally, D. D., editor-in-chief of the St. Louis
Christian Advocate. Dr. McAnally is a very
able man, and the paper of which he is the
head occupies the front rank among the re
ligious journals of the country.
Artist. Mr. Able, an artist from Califor
nia, has rented the photograph gallf ry of Mr.
J. A. Winter, and will continue the business.
Mr. A. has the reputation of being a fir4
class artist, and his patrons are assured of
getting picture true to life, and fiuished in
the most perfect and artistic manner, and at
prices low enough to satisfy the most eco
nomical Hurt. A valuable horse belong'ng to Mr.
A. V. Peters, on last Tuesday, caught his
hind foot in a rope which was around his
neck, and remained in that situation for a
considerable length of time before he was
discovered. His bead was badly lacerated,
the wounds was sewed np by Dr. Sheltnn, and
it is thought will not result in any perms
Bent injury.
He's Here. Marlborough, the Centennial
Cream Soda man has come to town, and will
be heard from on the street to-night. His
cream soda is strictly a " temperance " drink
manufactured without a fountain, and is de
cidedly the best thing out, and receives very
flattering notice by onr California exchanges.
He will supply the saloons in uwa. lie also
has the boas soap for cleansing and shaving
purposes, together with numerous other ar
ticles. .
Married. In this county, at the resi
dence of the bride's parents, on the 8th inst,
by Rev. J. S. McCain, Mr. S. H. Christian
and Misi Levina Belknap. Compliments re

upon the auspicious commeiccnent of ti e
most momentous journey 4 life. We tender
the happy groom and his fair bride oar mnet
sincere wishes that they may enjoy a long
life of unbroken happines and pro-perity.
Fire. On Wednesday afternoon onr citi

fire was found to be at the risidenc of Dr.

the University. The fire caught the roof of
the kitchen from the stove pipe. It wa dis

many friends, T. M. Martin will deliver a
liberal discourse on the third Sunday of this

Tramm. This class of pests have become
uite numerous aud troublesome through tlx
country of late. We have heard of qui'e n
number of ins!atces, this week, of these fol
lows going into homes at night after the iu
mates had retired, and ru umaging forplun
ler. Their raids have beeu couliued, so fa.
as we have heard, to hunting something to
eat, but we prusuinu .that they would have
uo scruples about appropriating anything ot
value that comes iu their way. Keep you.
doors and windows fastened, aud your alio
guns loaded.
Impudent. A tramp called at the resi
dence of C. W. Fitch, Esq., one day th's
week and demanded something to eat, aud
upon Mi's. F. refusing bis demand, iudulged
iu the mo t obsceno language. Mr. Fitch
appeared and drove the fellow otf. After
Mr. F. had left the house the scoundrel re
amed aud had to be driven away a second
ime, after which he weut to the residence
if Rev. Dr. Geary and repeated the perform
ance, then left towu before the police could
catch him. The old-fashioned whipping post
would be the most effective reformatory dis
cipline to apply to such rascals.
Runaway. On.Thursday a team belong
ing to Mr. Ilayden, started iu the alley back
if Humphrey's livery stable, and running
wo blocks, ran iu'.o James Huffs fenco,
breaking it down, aud continuing on through
a space about nine feet wide, between the
porch and fence, ami jumped the fence ou
he other side of the yard, where they were,
with some difficulty, stopped. There were a
number of children iu the yard, but fortu
nately, happened to be on the opposite side
of the house at the time. Mr. II. was iu
the wagon and was considerably hurt by fall
ing with his side across the foot-board of the
wagon.
The Wvmaxs. This troupe came up last
Saturday, having advertised an entertain
ment that eveuiug, but the attendance was
so slim that the performance was postpoued.
They gave an entertainment at Springfield
on Monday evening to a large and delighted
audience. They will ajijiear again at Spring
field on next Tuesday evening, when, after
the close of the entertainment, there will be
a social dance. Persons wishing to go from
this place can go, attend the entertainment
and dance and return for one dollar. Al
though there are but two performers, they
are inimitable in their peculiar role, and are
well worthy the patronage of the amusement-seeking
public.
Entekpbise. Mr. W. W. Espey returned
this week from Portland where he has been
looking after the interests of his business.
We learn that he contracted with Frauk
Bros., of that city, to build a number of
hacks and I u'giea for them, ami will com
mence work on the contract next Monday.
Mr. E. has mnv.d his wood-working and
paint shop to the building on the north side
of Eighth street, east of the Court House,
which gives him facilities for turning out a
large amouut of work. The excellence of his
manufactures is being recognized abroad as
well as at home, and he is now prepared to
successfully compete, both in quality and
prices, with foreign manufacturer!.
Special Car. A special car passed through
this city Tuesday with Capt J. D. Biles, of
Portland, and Prof. Chandler, of Bethlehem,
Pcun. The object of the trip was to make a
thorough eiamiuatim of the coal prmpects
of this country, Prof. Chandler being au ex
pert in coal mining. After examining the
mine at Comstock's, the party itopiied here
and examined the pronpects of the mine be
ing opened by Knoebel about eight miles
west of town, alto the mine being opened by
Eaton near Cb.verdale. We understand
,, , . . ,l -
P"'t Chandler was much pieced with the
