A VEIIY 8WIPT WITNESS.
- From the S. F. Examiner.
The W. II. N. Stiles who figures as
a volunteer witness in the Oregon
Grover case, is an interesting charao
tel. Ho rushes forward to tell how
much he knows of the alleged bribery
by which Senator Grover secured his
election. 1 hat he is a swill witness
no one can doubt after having read his
testimony. Ho was, by his own ac
count ubiqutous Lore, there, and ev
erywhere, and always in each particu
lar place at the precise moment lo
eayes-drop and spy upon Grover and
his confidential friends, just as they
were, each and all, passing remarks
upon the situation and uttering words
in bated breath and whispers which
honest men never utter. Yet he was
not in Grover's confidence, nor in that
of Grover's confidential friends, How
it happened then, t hut. he knew ex
actly v hen to bo within ear shot of
Grover and these friends, so as to bo
ablo to overhear the faintest whisper
that passed the lips of nny of them
in relation to the election, ho does not
engage to teveal. Yet ho b singular
ly open-mouthed on every other mat
ter calculate to make the charges
against Grover stick, it is also queer
that although Stiles swears he heard
all this whispering of bribery; and
knew all that he tells, as early as Sep
tember, it was nut until March 'hat
ho blurted it out, and tin n he made it
known lo the Hadical U. S. District
Attorney of Oregon, and to the Had
ical Collector of the Port of Portland,
because he was a Democrat, and bo-
euuso Grover, as Governor, had tried
to deprive lhe K-ulicals ot one ot tlio
tlireo Electoral votes of Oiegon. Hut,
il Grover had done anyf ingot Un
kind, it was iu December months be-
for- March that he did it Audit
is remarkable that, not till March, af
ter Grover had been admitted to his
seat in the Senate, and alter Have
bad been installed in the seal which
belonged to Tihlen, the virtuous and
Irand haling Stiles opened at ot'ce his
budset ol information against Grover;
took tho little $12 check trot- Collect
or Kelly for his story, and had his ho
tel bill at Salem paid while he staid
there, by, his now found Hadical
frionds.
Mr. Styles says his residence is at
Antelope Station. California. Il is
pin sidle that he seeks the appointment
oi Postmaster, or is a candidate for
some other position lit tho disposal of
the Administration? Mayhap ho is
only proving in Oregon Ins qualilica
liins, to convince Sargent, Gorhani,
Curr, and the " ring," that ho is just
tho kind of a round, through-thick-and
thin swearer they want, in ordor
that ho shall not lack congenial em
pi 'ymon iti their service such as
spying, caves dropping, and swearing
toanything that is required. Hi is,
wo fear, wasting his precious time and
lovely qualities iu lhe Web-foot Stale.
They aro a cheap sel of rogues up
there. They soil their votca for Sen
ator lor a paltry $1,000, when here
tho ordinary taritt' is, for a Hadical
legislator of even the lowest degree,
a big pile or a fat oflice. Therefore,
Mr. Stiles should bound back lo An
telope, and there leap into tho good
graces of tho " ring," and exercise lor
them his peculiar qualities as sneak,
snv. caves dropper and promiscuous
witness. Ho might shallow the Le
Young brothers and swear to almost
anything against them that Sargent,
or Page, or Car r, or Gorhani, would
suggest, iu tho libel- suits now under
way. Net, lie could be utilized
against Pinney. " ho shall say he
was not concealed under rinney s neu
in the hotel at Oakland, when that
retired parin -rof the "ring" firm got
back, and is not ready to swear to ev
