Lane Count Democracy.
The farmers of this county generally be'
ing busily employed in getter their seed
wheat in, the county central committee deem
ed It inexpedient to issue a call for a mass
meeting, and promulgate the following
the sentiment of the Democracy of Lone
county:
Whereat a call waa issued by the State
Democratic central Committee for mass
meetings throughout the State on the 8th
day of January 1877, we, the County Central
Committee of Lane county, deem it right to
give expression to the feelings of the Dem
ocracy of Lane County on this important
occasion, and have therefore adopted the
following resolutions which reflect the views
and feelings of the great mass of the party
in the county ; therefore, be it
- Resolved, That we believe that Samuel
J. Tilden and Thomas A. Hendricks were
fairly and honestly elected President and
Vice President of the United States, and
that they ought to be peaceably inaugurated
on the 4th of March next.
Resolved: that we believe it is the duty of
the House of Representatives to see that the
electorial votes for President be fairly counted.
Retolved, That we believe the electoral
"votes of Louisiana, South Carolina and Flor
ida certified by the returning boards of said
-states for Hayes and Wheeler are fradulent,
-corrupt, against the voice of the people of
those states, and should be corrected or re
jected. Resolved, That we condemn the acts of.
the administration in sending troops into
South Carolina and Louisiana for party pur
poses as unconstitutional, revolutionary and
subversive of the liberty of the people.
Resolved: That the action of Gov. L. F.
Grover in issuing a certificate to & A Cronin
was in our opinion consistent with his official
oath, and being purely a question of law we
hereby endorse his act, and will sustain hira
until the supreme judicial tribunal of the
land shall declare his act unconstutional ;
then as law abiding citizens we will cheer
fully submit to its decrees, as a willing sub
mission to law is the first and only safeguard
in a Republican form of Government
Resolved, That we deprecate war as a great
calamity, and distinctive of the best inter
ests of our country, but if we cannot secure
our rights legally at the polls without it, as
freemen, we accept it with all its horrors.
The Best. Mr. A. J. Dufur, ex-Centennial
Commissioner, writes ULiler date of Janua
ry 4th to George Belahaw as follows : ' 'Your
wheat being considered a superior article and
in small quantity, was selected, together with
a small quantity from Win. Powers and Sam
uel Davis, and weut to make up our "collec
tive State exhibit to be placed in competition
against the whole world, and succeeded in
carrying off the medal and diploma as a col
lective State exhibit. The awards are made
for the best collective State exhibit of wheat
in the world. There will be five medals and
diplomas issued to this State, and all honor
is due to those friends of Oregon who furnish
ed the material."
Remarkable. The Winter thus far in
this section has been a most remarkable one.
The amount of rain has been comparatively
small; there has been no snow in the valley
and at no time has the ground been frozen to
interfere with plowing. The work of plow
ing and seeding has gone steadily on fur
bout two months, and there is probably
more seed wheat in the ground now than
there was the first of May last year. An in
creased area is being put in and with the
present prospect, Lane county will produce
the largest crop in its history this season.
' Theatrical. The Wilton troupe pro
duced "Lost in London" lust Saturday night
for the benefit of the Engine fund. The gross
receipts amounted to fSO, and of this $40
was given to that fun.t, Mr. Wilton paying
11 expenses out of the remainder. On Mon
day a complimentary benefit was tendered to
Mrs. Wilton which was accepted and Tues
day evening appointed as the time, on which
occasion "Ten Nights in a Bar-room" was
produced. The hall was well filled and the
play was well rendered considering the inade
qute aumber of actors to the parts to be per
formed. This troupe will be joined in Port
land by other actors, among them Mrs. Wil
ton's sister, and will return on their way to
California in about six weeks.
Tbce Hoodlcms. The hoodlum element
was out in full force last Tuesday night, to
the rat discomfort of the intelligent and
respectable part of the audience. Hie noise
was mostly made by small boys who took
their cue from those who were old enough to
know better. We suggest to the proprietors
of the hall that hereafter they eject all whose
education has been so neglected that they da
not know enough to be decent, or whose
spontaneous cussedness cannot be controlled.
