Cbrlatmae.
Christmas was celebrated in our town in a
quiet way, with more than usual attention
'and joy. There wag nothing loud or demon
strative beyond a few tiny tin horns in tho
hands of infants, and a few fire-crackers ex-
ploded by small boys. The relicts of the
rude and barbarous ages have faded away iu
'our times and community to the merest
traces.
There were Christmas trees at the Metho
dist, Presbyterian and Christian churches.
At the Christian church the tree was a laurel,
arranged by tlw members of the Christian
and Baptist congregations. The house was
well iifled, but there was no jam. The exor
cises 'consisted of vocal music, a short ad
dress by Elder Burnett, the appearance of
Kris kringle, and the distribution. of tho
fruits of the tree. At the Methodist church
the jam of 'little children," old and 'young,
was to the degree of suffocation. The tree
was really a grove, and bearing, too, far more
than twelve manner ,of fruit. The programme
was ordinary; the music, both vocal and in.
strumental, was noteworthy and praise
worthy. .
There were a number of trees in private
families, where presents were distributed in
a liberal manner, and an unspeakable amount
of happiness was caused both among grown
folks and children. One of these, a remark
able tree, flourished and faded at the house
of John H. McClung, where was assembled
quite a number of his people and friends, who
were all made to feel very happy and at home
by the genial hospitality of Aunt Kate. In
course of the distribution of presents the
name of -Uncle Ela" (E. L. Applegate) was
called. Upon opening the package his pres
ent was found to be a very fine specimen, of
an aged "gem'an of color." This was appre
ciated as the joko of the occasion, and was
'subsequently found to have been the hmuly
work of the bright and mischevious Miss
Jesse Benton Applegato McClung. Every
"body received something good and nice,
which was of course attribted to the thought
fulness of Uncle John.
t Discharged. About ten days ago one of
the cabins nut un at tho summit of the mm
tain lor the safety of the mail carriers on the
McKenzie route was broken Into and the pro
visions and blankets carrie'd away. C. V.
Mburu and Jeff Zuniwalt, who had just
come over that route, were arrested for the
.offense. On examination before Justice Ogle
it was held that the proof was insufficient to
Wd them over.

Wheat Mahket. From the market re
port of thV Vegon'!iui of the 28th w take
this: "Buyers, and especially those who buy
to sliip, seem to bo at sea iu the uncertain
condition of tho market, and somo who deal
largely in ordinary, times are now cautious
and afraid. The advance has surprised them.
Ihey worder that it gave no Bigu of its com
ing, and fear that tho decline may also come
without warning. Some of tlie leading ex
porters say there is no fixed price for y heat,
that it altogether depends upon the wants of
the buyers and the conditions of the contract
which he is or may be under tho necessity to
fill. The dullness in the freight market is
source of regret to hip owners, and the low
prices of freight discourage them; bufm for
mer seasons they have reaped rich harvests
in carrying the grain of this coast, and it is
fair that tho farmers and shippers should
come iu for a share of the piofits occasional
ly. The lowest figure we now hear named
for wheat is $2 per cental, while 2 05 and
upward is quoted as current rates. Just how
much upward buyers would be willing to go
is a difficult matter to dstermine.
