Count? Court. This body met pursuant
to adjournment on Monday lost. But little
business was transacted except the auditing
of claims, the total amount of these being
17.455 92, about $3,000 of which was for
bridges. The contract entered into with Dr.
Harris at the September term for medical at
tendance on paupers was annulled, the court
holding that "medical attendance" must be
construed to include medicines, which view
was not concurred in by the doctor.
Thk Nkw Law of Attachmknt. The late
Oregon Legislature amended the' attachment
law so as to provide that an attachment may
be sued out to hold property of the defendant
until the questions at issue in the suit are de
cided. The affidavit of the party suing out
an attachment, need not state that the affiant
believes the defendant is endeavoring to put
his property out of his hands to defraud his
creditors, but that he is justly indebted to
&e affiant and that the same has not' been
paid.
Thanksgiving Service. There will be a
union Thanksgiving service November 30th,
at the Baptist church in this city. Preach
ing by Rev. E. R, Geary of the Presbyterian
church.
Increasing. The number of scholars in
attendance at the district school has increased
to such an extent that it has been found nec-

for several years pastor of the Episcopal
church in this place, has made application to
the Methodist church for admission into the
ministry of that body.
A Faint-Meatbd Lover. The Standard
of the 22d has the subjoined item:
A young man hailing from Eugene embark
ed upon the Northern bound train yesterday
morning with a yonng lady who had given
him her heart and was willing to give him
her hand also whenever a minister was will
ing to perform the ceremony, and it was with
this object in view that they traveled toward
the metropolis. A Sheriff from one of the
upper counties who had wormed himself into
the yonng man's secret, determined to have
.some sport at his expense and after leaving
Oregon City he announced to him his inten
tion of taking him in custody as soon as they
leached Portland. The young man hail an in
stinctive dread of Slierifls and the minions of
(the law in general and determined to elude
them if possible. When the train stopped
t Milwaukee he attempted to get oil but
-Was prevented by his shadow the Sheriff, who
. -did not wish to press the joke to such an ex
trftnity. At the car shops the young swain
was narrowly watched, but when the train
had got in motion and was traveling at the
rate of about ten miles an hour he forced
open the door of the car and made the des
perate leap leaving his inamorata to the ten
tier mercy of strangers. We cannot say what
the final upshot of this romance in real hfe
Jnay be, but it seems probable that the maid
en's hate will transplace her lore and that
he will seek a lord of braver material. Mrs.
Tompkins, who had herself just been made
happy by the release of her husband, who
had been unjustly confined in the peniten
tiary for another man's crime, took pity upon
the innocent girl in the fullness of her heart,
offered her a mother's protection and such
accommodations as were at her disposal
