II. s rifle fell from bis band and discharged tne con tents into bis left leg below the knee, shatter ine the large bone aud carrying away a large portion, fortunately, Messrs. .veriu ana Bedford, of Summer Lake, were near and rendered all the assistance in their power In the darkness of the night the young man was conveyed a distance of twenty-five miles to tbe bouse or Mr. uigaon, wnere ne was kindly cared Tor until medical aid could reach him. Or. T. VV. Sheltoo, was immedi ately called for, but although no time was lost, did not succeed in rescuing Dim until Saturday. As soon as tbe wound was dressed, 'be young man was conveyed to tbe residence of his father, making in all a ride of ninety miles in a two-horse wagon. Dr. Shelton informed as on Tuesday he bad hopes of sating the limb, and that the young man was getting along as well or better than would naturally be expected nouer ine circumstances. About eighteen months ago Dr. Shelton amputated the leg of a younger brother of the one now injured. Mr. J. T. Haodsaker has been a citizen of our State only about a year, 'lie is a graduate of Mo Readme College, III., and during the past year has been engaged in teanhiug. . Teaehere' Institute. The Lane County Teachers' Institute met at the Methodist church in Eugene on the 25th nit., and organized by electing E. P. Henderson chairman, and M. Judkios secre tary. An address on Education by Prof. Bailey was followed by others onthe same subject, and at 4 o'clock the institute adjourned to 8 p.m. On reassembling Messrs. Callisoo and Bo Ion and Mise Wilcox were appointed a com mittee to arrange a programme for tbe fol lowing day. Dorris, Callisoo ;aod Walton were appointed a committee to solicit funds, and the audience responded with 8113 50. Speeches on the sub ject were made by Professors Condon and ' Bailey, Judge Walton and others. institute adjourned to 9 o'clock on Wed nesday. 6n assembling at the appointed bonr the .exercises were opened with muiio by Miss Condon, followed by prayer. Tfce subject of Beading was introduced by uProf. Boloo. A discussion of this subject occupied tbe time nntil 11 o'clock. The '. subject of Oral Lessons was then introduced ibyfyrof. ..Henderson. Adjourned till 2 o'clock. Institute met at appointed time, Mr. :IIendereon in tbe cbair. Tbe opening exercises were followed by an .essay on education by K. A. Judkins. Mr. Huston next introduced tbe subject of Arith metic, which was followed by a discussion of the same. Critics reported and institute adjourned till 9 a. m. of tbe 27th. On Thursday morning, after the usual opening exercises. Orthography was intro duced by Miss Wilcox, and followed by tbe osaal discussion. Physical Geography was then Iotrodaced by Mr. Callisoo. Time for djouromeot having arrived, it was decided to centtnoe the discussion of this subject at the afternoon session, iod tbe institute ad journed. At 2 o'clock the sJiseoesioo was resumed by Messrs. Bailey. J. IT. D. Henderson, Rid dle and Condon. Primary Reading was then introduced and pretty lairly discussed fcy Messrs. Henderson in -some very pointed and pithy remarks ; ha was followed by others twho spoke to tbe point. Dr. Bailey and D. G. Clark of Corvallis were io town during the week. Tbe Sheriff's office in tbo court bouse has been enlarged and materially improved there- y. The contract for building a bridge across the Mobawk river will be let to the lowest bidder next Tuesday. The bugeoe correspondent or the Urego- nian has expunged tbe word "modesty" from bis vocabulary and puts in his spare time puffing himself. Conductor Stroud, who was considerably njured by tbe late railroad accident, is now able to be about, but be fears it will be some time before he can resume bis duties. A spaik from the blacksmithshop adjoin ing set fire to the frame bouse in tbe rear of the Masonic building last Saturday. It was extinguished before any damage was done. W. C. Myer of Ashland went south on the mail train Wednesday with bis Percbe run horses White Prince, Pride of Percbe and White Rose. He will return with his horses to tbe State Fair. Rudolph Hopf has begoo tbe manufacture of cheese on the farm of A. J. Keeney. So far be has made only that fragrant variety known as limburger, but will commence making cream cheese next week. Prof. Baldwin gave a spiritualistic show on Wednesday evening. We have seen more entertainment and fewer "scollops" for tbe same money once or twice during a check ered existence of 34 years' duration. Another Contract.
