The Portland Standard and also
the Mercury take common sense
views of the condition of affairs in re
gard to transportation in the Willara
ette Valley. The first thing proposed
when it was announced that the
opposition lines of steamers on oar
river had consolidated, was the build
ing ot new steamers by the farmers.
Capt Cochran, an old steamboat
I man, proposed to build one or more
boats and carry freight at low rates,
provided the farmers furnished tbe
heoessary means to do it, and allow'
ed him to own the boats when com
pleted. If the farmers desire to own
boats to transport their produce, let
them follow the plan proposed in
Yamhill county, which is to incorpo-
rate a company and allow but one,
two, three or four shares to be owned
by one individual. It is possible to
d. this, but the chance, are that in
less than two years al! the stock would
be in the hands ot a few men, who
would use the boats as the owners of

If, however, it could be carried out
according to the original intention no
doubt it would benefit shippers, for it
