Elator of lh Two-Third Bait, From tli New York Sua. la 183G, Martin- Van Uurea wis Dominated for tbe promdoDcy. He yrat Gen. Jackson's choice, and al though the nullifieri ot that day were opposed to bim, yet thore was no doubt of bis nomination. The only question was who should receive the nomination for vice-president. Col. Ilichard M. Johnson was the favorite of tbe hard-fisted democratic masses. A report written by bim in opposition to discontinuing the running of tbe United States Mail on Sunday had made bim popular in tbe North and West, bat Mr. Van Buren and bis friends desired to be reinforced by trong name for tbe Soutb. They preferred William C. Hives of Virgin ia. In order to defeat Johnson in tbe nomination, the two-tbiids rule was introduced by Mr. Van Buren's friends. Ii did not prevent Johnson's nomination but he failed to (jet the requisite number of electoral votes to secure bis election. t He was after ward selected by the United States Senate as vice-president. In tbe struggle at Baltimore in 1844, the two-tbirds rule was intro duced by K. M. Saunders, of North Carolina, in 'order to prevent Mr. Van Buren's nomination as I'resideut. The writer of this article was co oper ating with Saunders to defeat Mr. Van . Buren. On one occasion be reoolleols distinctly that be met Saunders in the , rotunda ot the Capitol at Washing ton. Tbis. was about tbe lime tbe Democratic convention was to meet at Baltimore. The writer remarked to Saunders that be was satisfied that a majority pf tbe delegates were for Van Buren, aod be oould not see how ho oould be deprived of the nomina tion. Saunders answered, "There is not majority sincerely in bis favor. Enough of them will vote for tbis resolution." He then exhibited the two-thirds role, and be added, "We will give Van bis own medicine." Afterward it is well known, Saunders tnd Robert J. Walker fought success fully tbis rnle through the convention against Mr. Van Buren's friends. The result was Polk's nomination. Since that time tbe role has formed part of the traditions ot the Democracy. George Fraud Train. Feeding the sparrows, playing with children, or vacantly surveying the passing throng in Madison square, a man who once made much fruitless noiso in tbe world, but who is now as quiet as a mute Gcorgo Francis Traiu may bo seen daily enjoying the sunshine and possibly turning in his own mighty mind many schemes for tbe benefit of mankind. Tho once irrepressible George lias become al most as silent as the grave. Tbe Ve auvian fire that was wont to mako a thunderous orator ot him seems to have burned itself out. Ho has ap parently cone to tbe condition ot the jolly old miner of tbe song, who oaied for nobody, no, not be, and no body cared for him. He now con tents himself with passing bis days in Madison square and his nights in a Turkish bath establishment near by, in wincu ne boards, lie has grown f;ray, but it is evident that tho quiet ife he leads agrees with bim. for lie is falling into flesh and looking strong ana nearly.
