President's recent proclamation calls to mind
a very important matter overlooked by those
having our celebration iu charge, wblvb was
the appointment of a historian to furnish a
history of the couuty for preservation. Tue
present Congress passed a resolution (March
13 last recommending that the people of the
United Stales "assemble in their respective
couoties or towns on the' approachiug Cen
tennial anniversary of our national inde
pendence, and that they cause to have de
livered on that day an historical sketch of
said county or town from its formation, and
that a copy of said sketch be filed, in print
or manuscript, in .the Clerk's office of said
county, and an additional copy to be filed in
the office of the Librarian of Congress to the
intent that a complete record may thus be
obtained of the progress of our institutions
dufiiig the first centennial of their exist
ence." The attention of those in charge has
beeu called to the matter, but as yet we have
heard of no appointment. Our clebration
will be very incomplete without this.
