Lost im.Tiib mountains. v e iearo mat Mr. John Craig started on the 3d of Feb Iroary from Belknap's Springs to Camp Polk do the other side.cf the fflountains, with the mail and has never since been heard iilthonzh communication has been had with the later place by way ol tho Dalles On the 29th of February Messrs. F. C. Ren frew end John Sims went to the summit and found no trace of him, and were obliged to 'return. Another, party was to start over mountains on last Tuesduy morning. Of 'course only the frozen body of the poor old 'm.n will be .found. This mail route to Camp Polk is one that should be discon 'tinned. The benefits of It are entirely iuad .' Annate to the danirers incurred. There are , not to exceed a half dozen persons who are benefitted it beyond Belknap s Springs ,'and those ouly measurably so, as mail mat- : ter sent by way of the Dallm reaches them almost aa soon as over this route. To the Springs there should be a mail, but from -that point the route for forty miles lies over a mountain road without a dwelling and ,.verfive to ten or fifteen feet of snow, and can enly be travelled on snow shoes; always at riik of the life of the traveller, in one in stance from tho terriblo . storm's which are liable to sweep over it and again from soil ening the snow so as to render travelling so , laborious that the carrier is too likely to be , come exhausted and thus perish. II. II. Gilfbv's Lectibr. Ou Saturday -evening Hon. II. II. Gilfry of Saloui do : livered at the Baptist Church the fourth i lecture of the Library "course, baviug for his .'subject, "The Tombs of Buried Cities." 'i The house .was well filled with an attentive 'and appreciative audience. Mr. Gillry's lecture was decidedly the best of the course, ,'and one of the most iiiterestiwr we have 'ever listened to. The Buhji'd is a prolific 'one and the lecture showed an exteusive re .' search into its mysterious depths by a mind .'capable of compreheudinr; its importance. 'He carried his bearers to the ruins of the 'once magnificient cities of the old world uud 'exhumed Iroin the buiied.henps ,many inter 'eating facts, and 'showing that there are ruins evcu in America that may some day 'offer up hidden treasures to throw light np 'on its earliest history. This was, we be lieve, Mr. Gilfry's first attempt in the lecture 'field and he acquitted himself with credit. Abrhsted. On Tuesday evening Deputy Sheriff Hojan of Douglas county arrested at this plaee Geo. W. Uitter, who is charged with having absconded from Wyoming with .about eleven thousand dollars. The pris oner stated that be was county treasurer and sfeo'fcounty judge, and that only the . charge cf 'fielalcation could be sustained against him, . as he had none of the money when he left- there. - His accounts showed that the amount mentioned wus lacking, ho ..did not explain how. :'IIe received the day . after his arreat a telegraphic bill of exchunge ifur $100 currency from his son at Laramie. He was taken south on Wednesday. One thousand dollars was offered for his arrest. ' ; New Steamships. S. S. Co. These vessels have been only recently built, . and for speed, freight, passenger accommo dation and seaworthiness are vastly superior to those at present in use on this route. The first steamship of the new fleet will -leave New York for this port about the 1st of April next." Incbeasino. The mail for Spencer Creek Cartwright, Crow, Long Tom, Cuesuer and Franklin leave Eugene City on Monday and arrive on Wednssdsy.
