To Hie I'eoplc of Cn uou. As I liavo nearly completed Uio work of collecting aud shipyiiijj tlio centenniul exhibit ot Orocon for the World's Fair, 1 deem il duo ta you that a abort statement bo tnado ot what has already been aoconiplittlied and what is still necessary to bo doDO to complete the work and make it a success. I have already, with ha as sistance of contributors lrom various parts of tho State, obtained notorial uflioient to fill forty-three largo boxes containing over 001) separate-pack oges, to be placed in tho department tor our state exmmt in tne centennial buildings in the space already scoured lor their" reception. This material consists of all our choicest vtricties of grain in tho sheaf and sack, tlax and its products in oil. oilmcal and lint, seed and straw ; grasses and seed, cuiuvaieu, ana an our nauve vuuu tics: all our native wood and tiin bcrs ; oar medical barks and roots ; flour from our wheat ; meal from our oats: all our fruits, dried on J pro served ; our wools in fleece and on card : our flora, mosses, ferns, etc. ; ourlauna;- tho prepared skins of many ot native birot, mineral paint, porcelain clay, condensed cider, an in fact specimens ot almost all our natural resources except our minerals. My colleaguo, .Mr. Virtue, will doubtless seo that our mineral re sources aro properly represented. I liave also made anangements (or woolea manufactures from tho Oro gon City woolep mills, Iron and iron ore from the Oswego iron works, fish from our salmon canneries; nlxo a map of our State, and tho ciliiRiition al, civil and social history ot its ad wanccinent from tho earliest period of Its settlement. Tho hintorieil work lias been put in tho hands ot Dr. O. II. Atkinson, and lion. L. LKow land, our ctlicicut Stato Superintend out ot Education, who, with their several committees, aro stiro to make this department a creditable success. There aro also arrangements made by which all our fruits and vegetables will bo received in their season. In accomplishing this work I havo been materially assisted by some of our troiniiiuiit farmers, and havo also boon given f'reo passage and transpor tation on tho O. & C. 11. K., and on tho several lines of the 0. S. N. t'o.'s boats w ithin tho Stato. Theso no commodations havo enabled mo to porlonu a largo amount of work that it would otherwiso havo been im nossiblo to niKionnilisli. (. V. Woldler, agent for tho O. S. S. Co., has also billed all the material ship pod as far as San Francisco, freight iroo. To procure, properly caro aud Drcparo for shipment transverso see- tions of our heavy limbers, I havo lai.t out WW (I j, for tho most of wluoh I havo vouchers ot pi.yment Of this amount I have received by Itrivato contribution from II. W. Cor ott, Sf.O; Henry Failing, 850 ; V. f Ladd, $50; 11. K. Thompson, .r)0; O. & 0. It. li., 50; Corl.ett & Mack-ny, $'-'(); J. llawthorno, ?20; and J. It. Montgomery, $20 making in nil Jiiiu. Tho work thus far within tho State has not been done without a consider able sacrifice of tiinu and a small out lay for my own private expenses, but funds must now bo raised to pay the J' ! 1 I , 1 iruii.ii aim terminal onarges in ad vance from San Francisco to l'hiladel- Iriiia, or tho work must stop where it . Theso charges, from tho best in- lormatioQ 1 havo been able to obtain will not bo les than $')0(). Shall tho matorial go forward? Funds must also bo procured for preparing tho spnoo with suitable platforms, coun ters, railings, shelving, showcases, ito., and it can hardly bo expected that one man can attend to and per forin nil tho work unless assistance and means be furnished him. Doubtless tho people of this Stato, llirougli tlunr legislature, another fall will make further appropriations for theso contingent oxpenses will have to bo- incurred previous to that time. Will our capitalists and merchants, our railroad men nud bankers, our land holders, fanners, manufacturers and speculators, who aro all interest ed in having our Stato properly ad vertised to tho world, furnish tho means to completo tho work ? The C. 1. K. 11., is making extensive ar. rangcnients to have the material from their land grant prominently placed ou exhibition at the coming sIi-jw. ll ourpeoplo ue-Iect this opportunity, uovcr let thi ih comp'aiu that Califor ltians stop all tho immigration in their State.
