The Corvallis Gazette quotes oar item of February 12th and makes an addendum, as followi : All ii well that en da well-bat the downward passage of the Champion does not Drove "that not amen time Deed be lost," bat rather the contrary. The Cham nion left Eugene City early nn Friday morn - fog, and proceeded bat a few miles when her wheel wag greatly damaged. Repairs were .made, as promptly as possible, and the boat started again, but between snags and sand ,bw8,ccidents and incidents peculiar to the navigation of the Willamette river, she did inot make Corvallis until about 7 p. m., on Monday. Facts are stubborn things, Bro J Boys, and do amount of newspaper "blow fiog" will remove the snags and sand bars, or wideo, deepen, or straighten the tortuous channel Of the Willamette above Uorvallis. Guess you'd better nove your little burg 'down to Corvallis the bead or navigation ion Ihe Willamette. If it is gratifying to the Gazette to have Its location at "the bead ol navigation" we have not the slightest objection, as it will cot keep enterprising steamboat mien from .going above the "head." The down trip of tbi Champion does not prove anything .against us. We have a faiut recollection ol a steamboat or two having met with unfor tunate accidents even some distance below Corvallis, the Shoshone, for instance, which was sunk and abandoned opposite Salem. The Champion has made two trips here since, the lsst time having left bore on Mon day aud made the return trip from Fort land reaching here on Saturday. -We ad vise Carter to fold bis oars, if possible, to a sufficiently small compass to enable him get oo to a steamboat aod then move bis "bead" to Springfield, six miles by river above Eugene, where do one will dispute his claim. Mr. Robert Eakin, attorney, will attend to Mr. Ellswortl s unfinished busi ness. He can be addressed at Union, O'r gon. 1 The late SUikely Gllaworth. At the request of a -number of warm frieDds of the late.-S. Ellsworth, the follow-) ing authentic sketch of his life is furnished 09 for publication : Stukely Ellsworth was born at Stockton, Chatsuqua county, New -.York, Dec. 18th, 1826. j lie was early in life at school, and while unite vounz suffered much from tbe complaints incident to childhood. He re ceived 4. good academical education m ma native -cwioty, and in 1843 was admitted to Yale College, receiving bis diploma there in the summer of 1847. About, ibis tune Jie, irrew much stronger in ibealth, nd began . . . . t 1 ,r 1 t I - the study 01 law at uunaio. jew 1 or. iu 1849 hareLurned to settle up tbe estate of hia father, who died in January of that year, and soon acquired distinction throughout bis neighborhood aod county. Here he remain ed until be came to Oregon, early in 1855, since which time his career is well known to thepeoplaof this State. He was married in, the summer of 1856, and leaves five interest ing children, one having died .-quite young. He was a prominent member of the fraterni ty of Odd Fellows, who will doubtless deep ly feel bis loss. Many tbiojc he could have acquired political preferment had bis inclina tion turned that way. He was of a bright and cheerfol spirit, and a very good scholar, taking several prizes while at college. While we most deeply mourn nia departure we are consoled by tbe reflection that what is our loss may be bis eternal gain. He had an unfaltering hope, expressed in the most nnequivocal terms in his last sickness, and bis Ust words were, "come Lord, and take me from earth," having just before left his message of love to alt the absent mem bers of the family. Thus bas passed from earth one who may without partiality be esteemed as baviqg been one of tbe best citizens of Oregon, and one of her best .and tried friends. How to BalieOtte Free from mo. According to the Oakland Centennial there is a firm in Douglas county by the name, of "Lord & Savour." Elder J. C. Richardson has been investigating its affairs. Pinchback in a publio letter has replied to the attack on his character by Senator Merriman. He deplores the color line in politics, aod declares that the colored men do not desire its perpetuation. They rather hope for a co-operation or races in tbe South, and will sink all race questions when their persons are safe from proscription and persecution. Gen. Applegate played a most heathenish game on tbe Temperance Alliance at Port land last week. A few days previously a lodge of Independent Order of Old Drunks was organized at Salem, and tbe General was one of the members. lie got creden tials and attended tbe Alliance and at the first opportunity made a speech in favor of bis New Deal, and demanded that tbe Alli ance nominate him for United States Sena-. tor.
