MULTNOMAH DELEG ITES.
If Multnomah county wishes
representation in the republican
state convention she must send
only one set of delegates to the
convention. The outside coun
ties will not attempt to favor one
faction at the expense of another.
They cannot afford to so do.
Neither can they afford to seat
both delegations, and experience
has proven that dividing the del
egation does nol heal factional
breache.-,.
Multnomah has two republi
can county central committees,
both claiming to bj regular, and
both recognized by the l:v t state
convention as being regular.
Each committee claims to repre
sent a large majority of republi
can voters of the county. Both
committees worked earnestly for
the success of McKinley and Ho-
bart. Sol Hirch is chairman of
one committee and Donald Mc
Kay, of the other.
Mr. Hirch's committee, it will
be remembered, some time ago
mads a proposal for peace. Mr.
McKay's committee rejected the
offer in a rather vitrolic letter.
Those who attended the recent
club convention perhaps under
stands why it will be very diffi
cult to secure party harmony in ;
Portland.
It is the contention of some j
papers that the faction which .
honestly strives to bring about a

sentatiou in the state convention.
There is reason behind this view,
but good politics demands that
both sides be treated exactly
alike, and that if both factions
hold primaries and two send del-1
egates to Astoria, both factious
be ignored.

The Matter of Regents.
Within two weeks the terms of
W. E. Yates, Wallis Nash and T.
W. Davenport as regents of the
Oregon Agricultural College ex
pire, and upon Governor Lord will
devolve the appointment of their
successors.
While their is no absolute rule
to that effect, custom and expedi
ency suggest that at least one re
gent should be a resident of Cor-
vallis and local interest is largely
centered in the successor of Mr.
Yates. It is generally believed
that he will be reappointed.
The friends of the college are ap
parently will satisfied with his
work as regtuit, and any other con
sideration that might move the
governor would still involve the
selection of Mr. Yates.
There are no oilier avowed can
didates for the position, although
the names of M. S. Woodcock and
John Daly have been talked of in
that connection. If they are ap
plicants, however, their campaign
has been of the still hunt variety,

from reappointment, but it is not
generally believed (hat Gov. Lord

charged him with total absence of
political, sagacity, and no politics
is sometimes the best ol politics.

ing Governor Lord. Of the latter

Lord, of Oregon, and he is now a
man filly nine years old. A schol
arly young lawyer, he left his

cavalry company. With several
promotions lor gallantry in the
field to ks credit, he went into
the law again after the war. Bui

regular army and saw service in
Alaska.
